Bad Batteries

Hey all,

The other day I prepped a panaflex lightweight at panavision. I couldn't get the rig to power the camera and accessories. After having a hand from several folks and troubleshooting all kinds of things for many hours we decided to test the dionic hcs on the bottom of the sled. One was bad yet displaying a full charge. It was a forehead slapping moment for everyone. Big thanks to Dominic and everyone at Panavision. Hope someone can learn from my experience down the road.

Or you guys could call up A/B and have them check it out. One of my Hytron140s threw a fit the other day claiming full charge but folded quickly instead. I sent it to A/B and they tested it, reprogrammed the display, and returned it quickly. Just saying, give them a call.

Also, if you have a charger with the Diagnostics module, I suggest letting it discharge and condition your battery. (I don't like these chargers for on-set use because inevitably, they will want to run a 24 hour test on a battery and if the AC isn't paying enough attention to hit cancel, then the battery is not charging). I just did this to two of my batteries that didn't seem to be agreeing with thier meters and I think its helped (a little early to tell for sure).

Victor, I believe you can open it up and unplug it (a little plastic connector going from the unit - labeled - to another board. I seem to think I did this once in my career, but you should double check. I may have hallucinated doing at after a night out with Baldwin.

Hi All

A heads up on the HCX series batteries, I have had several with firmware issues that required reprogramming by Anton Bauer.

If you are still under warranty or close to it they will reprogram the firmware. (the display will show charge but will have no voltage at output terminals)

Also have had issues with the thermal sensor and capacitors blowing in the temp sense circuit, again return them to Anton Bauer for repair.

As to the 2722 charger... the dis-charger is built into the logic control board and cannot be unplugged.

On the 2702 Quad and 2400 series chargers the dis-charger can be disconnected by unplugging it from the logic control circuit board.

(ribbon cable towards the right rear, look for it on top of the fan)
