in the behihind the scenes of The Wall, the first Matrix, and I think Ghostbusters (uncle Teddy) you can see the ops working with panaglides. I was talking to Hugo about an Aussie op with a panaglide...he said he thought it is not an "actual" one, but a copy made at a machine shop many moons ago.

The Aussie operator you are refering too is probably Rob Agganis, who did the steadicam on the first Matrix. He built his own rig, but it's no more a copy of a Panaglide than any other rig. Rob is very smart with engineering as well a great operator and is always improving his rig. He has however told me he feels he would have been taken more seriously as an operator had he bought a rig. I know this is true as a while back I was shooting on a commercial and the (American) DP said he was pleased to see an op with a real rig as the other day another op had brought a home made rig onto his set.

Beats me, it was good enough for The Matrix and many other films.

Here a nice one of Ted Churchill with the Panaglide.

I believe that Charles Papert made this picture.

I believe I did, too!

Snapped on the set of "Falling in Love" in 1984, NYC. Teddy was really excited that day because he was shooting a scene in a construction elevator with Robert DeNiro and Harvey Keitel, who he hadn't thought had worked together since the "Mean Streets"/"Taxi Driver" days.

Somewhere around this time I was at his place and he came running in with a package he had just received; a Model 3 post engineered to mount to the Panaglide base. I believe the primary advantage of this was that he could use his own gimbal (he was already using his own vest and arm already), this was just another piece in the puzzle to replace the lesser parts of the Panaglide.

I seem to remember hearing that the rig was actually lighter than the 3, though...?

I re-watched the movie 'Crocodile' Dundee II (1988) a couple of days ago. And for the first time realized it had some BTS footage as bonus. There are 4 scenes of Geoffrey Wharton (he also did 'Crocodile Dundee' (1986) )shooting with the Panaglide... it was even a very early model with 3A arm and Gimbal...

I was sure that Panavision had destroyed all Panaglides before 1988... I guess not.

Credits are as follows:

Geoffrey Wharton .... panaglide operator: Australia

Larry McConkey .... steadicam operator: New York (as Larry McConky)

Which makes me to believe that the Panaglides was kept alive longer and got sold and not cut up as I raised that suspicion about 'The Matrix' (1999) in another post, as it looked as if a Panaglide was used...

It turned out to be a Panaglide/homemade deal...

Robert Agganis .... steadicam operator

Anyhow, Just wanted to share for the Steadicam History buffs,

Erwin

I think it is somewhat common knowledge that bits and pieces of Panavision gear have found their way into private ownership over the years. I have heard rumors of a Panaflex that lives at a production company on the east coast. All fun and mysterious types of things.

A number of years ago I came across a set of 2C Steadimags at a rental house in San Francisco that appeared to have been built for the original Panaglide (i.e. non-sync sound version). No-one there could say how they came to have them, and they wouldn't sell them either! They were nice looking mags, the 70's Panavision logo emblazoned across the side, and they were milled out of a single block from the look of them (predating the SL Cines by a number of years), but I'm willing to bet that they suffered from the same torque issues that plagued all other Steadimags before the SL version.
