Solid Wood Front Boxes

Latest cocobolo box to be completed. This one is going to Grayson Austin. Although the look of cocobolo is spectacular, I'm not sure I want to do many more with this wood. It is extremely dense and forces me to sharpen my blades every 5-10 minutes. It also has some natural oils that can be rather irritating to skin and lungs (the finished boxes are sealed). That said, if anyone would like a box and cocobolo is a must have, let me know. The price might have to be a little more than quoted above.

This box, in particular, I'm pleased with the way some of the characteristics of the wood worked out. There were some very pale sapwood parts I was able to use for the sides that contrasted nicely with the front piece. Also, the grain pattern in the base looks like some sort of Japanese painting of volcanoes or something. No additional coloring or manipulation went into those patterns. It's quite a remarkable wood.

Work in NYC has been pretty non stop since early summer, which is hard to complain about, but it's kept me out of the shop for the most part. Back to day playing now, I was able to slowly make some progress on the waiting list for the boxes. Thank you so much for the patience of those on the list. I assure you I will get to your box, and put as much love into it that I did this one.

In addition to finishing a box on the list, I was finally able to document the construction process. Hopefully this will shed some light on things, and perhaps illustrate why each one takes as long as it does.

This gorgeous box is spoken for, but please let me know if you would like to get on the list. Work typically slows down a bit in the winter so that should mean more time spent in the shop.

Afton, I've been holding out on jumping on the list for these gorgeous boxes for a while now, but I would love to be added to the waiting list. I think it must have been the Bach that finally convinced me. Beautiful work, and wonderful music selection as well.
