Greg,

 

I'd keep a NiCad in the mix for those high amperage situations you mentioned (i.e. 435). There are a number of places that re-cell Proformers, look around the archives here. Also, call Anton Bauer directly because they did make another run of Proformers just for us Stead-folks. Don't know if they have any left, but call Paul Dudeck at 800-422-3473 and ask him (tell him I said "hi").

Hey Guys! :D

Its been awhile hope all is well with everyone so I'll get down to business.

I've been looking at a used master elite but when I went to do some homework on it I saw a master film? :o

My question is this... What's the difference between the two or is it the same. Thanks. BTW that was one hell of a slashing on sk2 vs flyer blog. MY GOD THAT WAS BRUTAL!!! It was painful to read but it is what it is. WOW!!! :blink: So be nice to me PLEASE!! :unsure: Just let me have my last supper and Fly the rig one more time before I'm executed. :D

hi nik, good to see you..

 

basic differences is the MS film has motorized stage with a wireless remote to control the stage where as the elite does not. a couple of other differences but they are bacially the same.

 

if you look on the steadicam-ops.com front page you will see some old resource manuals.

 

specifically this one:

page 45 speaks about the specs of both sleds as well as other sleds. this was published in the late 90's so it has some good info (and nice photos!) of OPs...

Nikk,

 

The stock Elite has a 4" 4:3 native green screen monitor (will do 16:9 in letterbox) and the film has a 5" native 16:9 green screen (will do 4:3 reversed letterbox).

 

Also, Film version usually has a leather vest where as the Elite vest does not boast the leather (not really a bad thing because the leather squeaks).

Additionally, the MS Film had a set of electronics that my MS Elite did not. Bubble level, etc.

 

The SOA links through to an exhaustively interesting paper written by some fine person that lists the breakdowns of features for various rigs.

hey guys....can smeone tell me abt the Master Elite series...hows the rig? can it fly arri 535?..heard tht the sled itself is quite heavy???? reply asap.....

The rigs weight would not be the first thing I would be thinking about if I was asked to fly a 535. Have you tried to lift a 535A or 535 B? Now you are talking Heavy cameras .You will earn every cent when you fly these pigs . I would ask the production if it was possible to use a more friendly steadicam camera like a Moviecam compact or aaton 35.

As for the Masters Elite I know friends who use Elite"s. and they fly fine with all 35 mm cameras.

The answeer to your question "is the master rig heavy"?I would have to say Yes it is heavy when you compare it to some other rigs that fly the same cameras. I would think the masters arm would be able to fly a 535b as I don't own a masters rig I couldn't say 100% I would be very surprised if it couldn't. My advise Say No to flying the 535.If they (your PM ) wants to know Why? Put him in the rig with the 535 and see how long he lasts .You will get instant respect from him for what you want and a more steadicam friendly camera from the rental house.

Hi,

I owned a Master Series Elite rig, from early in 1996 till summer of 2002. I did indeed fly a 535B several times. I do not recall flying a 535. I do specifically recall flying an Arri BL IV ( " La Boat Anchor " ) a few times.

 

The arm was astonishingly strong. I don't have the specs before me, but it's upper range was daunting. On the lower end, I could fly a Sony 400 BetaCam with a brick battery and it balanced out just fine.

 

Quite a rig. In another thread about MS rigs and vibration, I saw some very helpful comments. Might I add a few in this regard? The linear bearings in the early MS rigs were harder to keep tightened down- they did a lovely adjust to the internal design in the top stage, and the issues were resolved. Check to make sure that the small screws in the stage that keep the internal plates, and linear bearings in place are tightened appropriate.

 

Or, if you can spare it, take off the top stage and send it to Tiffen to be serviced, tightened, lubed, etc. Yes, you can remove the top stage of a Master Series rig in the field. Ya just gotta know what NOT to yank. :blink:

 

I did it twice, to have it worked on. Much lighter than shipping the entire sled. Then again, I'm one of those folks who have alwas been very fond of taking my gear apart. A lot. :)

 

Heck, the day Kenn Ferro took delivery on his IIIA arm ( one of the first ones built by C.P. ), he and I were teaching at Malibu under Bob Crone. We laid the brand new arm down on a towel, before a nice roaring fire in the gray house, and took it apart rather completely. No problem. -cackle- but we DID have one small piece left over when we put it back together.....

I've got a small issue with dirty video feed down the post at the moment.

 

Recently on my Master Series I've been using an LCD on the rig, and have been splitting the video from the 4-pin Hirose cable, using a breakout cable to a 4 pin XLR and BNC. The problem I have when I do this, is that the video feed appears dirty, there is interferance. The picture is just useable, and in some cases I have had to use it as it is the only way I can access the frameline generator, but for the rest of the time I've been running a separate BNC off the base of the sled and operating without framelines.

 

This isn't a problem with the monitor, nor with termination, as I have checked both of these out. I'm assuming it is either the cabling or connectors on the sled, or the breakout cable itself. Just wandering if anyone else has experienced this problem or found a cure. Strangely, when using the green screen CRT, the video picture appears fine, no disturbance or interferance is visible, which makes me think that maybe it is the breakout cable to the LCD?

 

Any opinions welcome,

Hi, I use an Transvideo LCD on my Master Film, and I have no troubles.....I use a 4 pin Hirose cable to a 6 pin Hirose cable, and I have the frameline and level buble, no dirty picture,and no interferance, maybe the cable or the monitor doesn't accept the video from the Master??? but I'm not sure.
