Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted July 2, 2015 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 2, 2015 You probably want to get a carnet if you dont want any hassles. Google it and youll get lots of info.
Premium Members axel ebermann Posted July 2, 2015 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 2, 2015 Ideally get a carnet (which is a temporary export-import form). Otherwise you should at least register your gear with US customs when you leave.
Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted July 2, 2015 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 2, 2015 The carnet will let you enter Italy or any other carnet country without having to pay import taxes. It will also let you bring it home. If traveling without it your gear could end up stuck in customs until you pay a company to get it out which i would assume would be a lot more expensive than getting a carnet in advance. If traveling without a carnet registering with US customs before the trip will atleast let you bring it home (assuming you are from the US) without having to pay import duties. Premium Members JensSchroeder Posted July 3, 2015 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 3, 2015 Hi Andy, Greetings from Europe. It's right, I definitly would recommend the A.T.A. Carnet. You have to file the main items (don't list every single piece because that causes too much work for customs :-) ). with serial number, price and origin country. As to the price, don't use the real price. If the sum is over a certain amount, you need an extra guarantee. Maybe everything not more than 10000,-USD. Then you have to present everything at your home customs before departing so that they can check if everything is correct. I would recommend to do it several days before departure and not at the airport. But at the airport you have to go to customs again to receive a final 'leaving' stamp. Get the baggage tags for the equipment first at check in counter but DON'T have the equipment checked in yet. Take it with the tags to US customs and usually you leave it there and they put it on the plane for you. If they are not so experienced, they hand it over back to you and then you just bring it back to the airline check in counter. In Italy you go through red and present the carnet to customs. On your way back do it the same style as you did in the US, means get the baggage tags first and then go to customs with the equipment. The chamber of commerce should have the carnet documents and they should assist you with filling it out because you have to pay attention to some points. If you need more info, just let me know. I looove carnets. :-( I will be traveling to Italy for the first time next week. I will be bringing a Steadicam Pilot, camera, mic, etc..
