Premium Members Garrett Brown Posted October 16, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 16, 2005 Check it out at www.ulik.com/handsfree Click on Steadicam and video and stream Patrick van Weeren shooting a Marching Band Competition. It was two and a half hours of work, riding on our 'Handsfree Transporter', Ulik and Reinhardt's brilliant modification of the Segway. Patrick in action was shot by Chris Fawcett. Inspiring! We'll ask Patrick to report directly on his experience. His e-mail to me suggests that it was a perfect technological match... smooth, precise, fast and much easier than being on foot... looks like he travelled miles! mattmarek
interesting. thanks for the link. doesnt seem to work in english, even though you are given an 'english site' option. i like the quote by the director under the feedback page : 'The handsfree transporter is one of the most revolutionary pieces of film equipment i have ever experienced...a pleasure to work with, very exciting.' - david cassel :) how rich! :D

bobgilles
Seems to me that the arm should be mounted to the Segway to give the operator more control of his weight, how much does this Transporter cost???
Premium Members Marc Abernathy Posted October 20, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 20, 2005 simply beautiful. i saw jerry holway on it at cinegear and it was just breathtaking. partick makes it look like childs play. i want to know what the learning curve is? price is probably the cost of a used Rig... Premium Members Thomas English Posted October 20, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 20, 2005 how fast!!!!!! running shots? Premium Members Thomas English Posted October 20, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 20, 2005 the segway from handsfree does 21kph or 13 mph the average human can run a maximum of 15mph wow! this could be the solution for running shots! no more rickshaws!!! ? How hard can you crash one of these things by falling off a curb or going over a big bump?

Matt Burton
Amazing stuff ! Has anybody tried the AR on it yet ? The Segway Garrett is on (on the www.ulik.com link) looks to have better wheels for bumpy english pavements! Also, can anybody explain how the segway is controled by the feet, kinda like a tank i'd expect ? -Matt
Premium Members Jerry Holway Posted October 20, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 20, 2005 I've gotten a lot better since Cinegear on the Handsfree Transporter ? several more practice days doing a lot of hitting marks, circles, figure eights, etc., changing directions violently, backwards and forwards, line dancing, etc. Stepping off is about as easy as stepping off a curb (going either forwards or backwards); stepping on is not much more difficult (nervewracking the first few times, but actually very easy). Bumpy pavement and lumpy grass is no problem, especially with the big-wheeled version. Learning curve: you can make it go in a few heartbeats; but doing what the director wants on real locations.... I'd practice (okay, play around on it) for about a week to be really sure of myself, a couple of hours each day. I suspect it's a bit like Steadicam operating; the more you do, the better it gets. We've had a lot of fun with fast moves (no jostling, incredibly smooth, fast accelerations) and also very slow moves... creeping along incredibly slowly and consistently without tension or sweat. The Handsfree Transporter is also naturally acceleration compensated... the sled doesn't want to lag behind in starts or keep moving when you stop, so it's really easy to control. More as we learn more, of course, and the Rickshaws will still have their places of glory.... Jerry Holway
Matt Burton
Incredibal stuff ! I never even imagined all the slow stuff you could do with it. Might have to sell my car for one, but i hope the girlfriend won't mind riding to the shops on it :D -matt
Premium Members Thomas English Posted October 21, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 21, 2005 how do you steer it? not via the handgrip controll normally on the segway
Premium Members Marc Abernathy Posted October 21, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 21, 2005 if i rememebrr seeing mr. holway on it, you use your knees to move the levers they are touching. jerry, does tiffen have one that you can come in and play on? i would make a trip out to LA just to get on the transporter sans Rig of course.... Actually there are foot pedals on the bottom deck that control steering. Don't believe Tiffen is in possession of one, no. It's a hoot to take for a spin! Premium Members Thomas English Posted October 21, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 21, 2005 so the regular off road segway comes in at $4900 . This is the one I would be interested in for regular use. How much of a bump are we talking about for a relatively simple modification? I think the little plastic screws on an ultra cost my mate $80. a used rig costs in the region of $20 000 I hope the grown ups don t take the mickey on this one.
