We would like to introduce you to a new system «UniVice».

The name of the device «UniVice» (Universal Device) based on the device being versatile. This device is programed to twist everything that revolves in the lens, while still being able to operate in time-lapse mode. In the future we are looking to develop accessorise such as "panoramic head" and a device which will enable motorisation of sliders. All accessories will be working in synchronisation with the device and will be working both in a time-lapse and simply video mode. I am not going to hide the fact that we are currently in a process of creating and perfecting autofocus mode on the device, and if we had previously had doubts about whether it will be possible to create such a function, we have now almost finished programming this function (and even though it is still in a development process, the function shows good result).

Let me tell more about our "baby", about its pros and cons (which I will not hide). You will learn what we have done and what else we’ve got to do.

Note, all photos, video that you see are those of a prototype and not of a market sample! Some features of the device when it is finished might be different to the ones you are able to see now.

About the device

We used a BLGC Motor, in conjunction with the "absolute encoder". This gives the device great accuracy, compactness of the drive, and allows the device to be lightweighted: the drive weighs only 60g and accessory to adjust height weighs is about 30g. It is ideal for usage with Handheld Camera Stabilizer and multi-rotor helicopter systems. The drive is fixed with a bolt eccentric clamp which is easy to attach to support. It is also important to note the device’s high speed and its silent operation.

Currently the drive is connected with controller by means of wires and connectors HDMI, it might seem strange, but this is the only available solution for us at this stage. In the final version we will be using connectors LEMO, however using these connectors will increases the cost of construction.

Functionality of the device

The controller has 4 buttons: the power button, and 3 channel buttons.

The controller also has 4 of the indicator. Indicators show in which mode controller is operating: "Auto" or "Manual". In "Auto" mode, the controller automatically adjusts the limits of the rotation of the lens. In a «Manual" mode, the user himself sets limits on the range of rotation of the lens ring.

Remote Control

Remote Control has 1.3-inch OLED display although it is not big, it is well readable. We used the display with was developed with Organic Light-Emitting Diode technology which allows you to see the screen even in bright sunlight.

There are four memory buttons. If you click and hold the memory button, the device will remember its current positions from various channels; if you click the button the recorded positions will be reproduced.

The remote control has a joystick (for controlling the zoom ring), slide potentiometer (for IRIS ring) and the focus knob.

The remote has settings menu, where you can synchronise the lenses’ scale with the device, which are then duplicated on the remote control screen.

The device has a memory which could record the settings for up to 10 models of lenses.

Function Time Laps can also be customised in the settings menu; the settings are interactive (when you change once settings other setting will recalculate automatically).

Main screen

Appearance of the main screen can also be customised to suit user's requirements: display can be adjusted to display the "digital screen" or to display the scale.

There is function "Marker"

This feature sets the marks where you would like them to be without the need to draw on the handle. The marks can be set and delete with one click of the button. Mark moves together with the scale on the screen, and it is attributed an individual index number.

About us

We are a team of two from Belarus. I, Mihail Ivanenko, and my friend and my team-mate Aleksey Verlaty. We have been developing this device for a year now. Despite the fact that we are a small team, we have got though a big job and a lot of obstacles. We also found some companies that are willing to help us in the production of our device.

The device is evolving every day as we are constantly working on it to make it better! We welcome constructive criticism and we will consider any suggestions you might have on how to improve the device. Any help in the development of the device will be highly appreciated!

Please visit and join our Facebook group to be kept up to date with the development of our device: https://www.facebook.com/groups/UniVice/ . Please note that although the group is predominantly in Russian we will reply to your questions, suggestions and criticism.

I'm sorry. This is not advertising.

This product exists in a single copy, and it's not for sale.

I ask you for some help to make the device better.

My name is Mihail Ivanenko i from Belarus

If I broke the rules, remove my topic.

Mihail;

This sure seems like a product or it soon will be. While yes I get that you need feedback it's already far into development and I sense an impending product which is good but posting it as a full fledged device is hard to separate from free publicity.

I'd also try Steadicam Facebook and see what they can provide for feedback.

This is something you should discuss with Tim Tyler.

Good luck.

Janice

From what I see, the only critique I would have right off the bat is Locking connectors, those barrel and jack connectors are no good. Plus the use of HDMI connectors in the pro world is frowned upon, and it's supposed to be a video connector, let's not get the AC confused. Also the antenna is huge on the receiver part.

I agree with Janice that this is publicity to some degree and you should look into becoming a sustaining member to do so.

Feel free to post on facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/thesteadicamgroup/

Best,

Victor L.

Thanks,

This is why I posted a topic to know your opinion, opinion of professionals!

I wrote that the connectors will be used LEMO

If necessary, I will give a video of his work, but I'm waiting for an answer from Tim Tyler for approval of fasting

Hello Mih,

How much current does this draw?

How stiff a lens can it turn?

How big is the gear that meshes with the lens?

The current consumption of a maximum of 1.5 amps motor, only with a high-speed rotation
We tested the device with multiple lenses firm Arri Zeiss Prime and Canon CN
the result is good, to a temperature of minus 7 degrees,
Lens rotation without restriction

Congratulations on finishing your system! Here is a partial list of companies making a similar product:

Preston Cinema Systems

Cmotion

ARRI

BarTech Engineering (thank you)

Redrock Micro

Ikan/PD movie

Tiltamax

Cinegears

RT Motion

Betz Tools

Varizoom

Heden

DJI

Hocus Products/Axis one

Element Technica

Chrosziel

Jag35

I'm sure there are some I've missed. I just found out about DJI today. And that doesn't include the ones that had a similar product but gave up such as ViewFactor, Seitz, Panavision, MK-V, VFX, Foveas, Scorpio, Cinema Products, Action Products, etc.

I'm not trying to discourage you, just trying to let you know what you are up against. If the market was this crowded back in 1999 I would never have developed the BFD.

Welcome to the ThunderDome!

Jim Bartell
