I cut out the foam and lay the arm and arm posts flat in the foam. I figure for $20K for the arm it deserves the best case. Or even better still, try using an electric carving knife! I'm sure that some of our parents had units like this and boy do they do a fine job of cutting that thick foam. Just take your time and make slow, deliberate strokes that are exactly perpendicular to the broad surface of the foam sheet. Good cutting! And Mark, try looking around at sports stores like REI or EMS for the packing materials from kayaks and bikes. Stores like this love the idea of reusing the packing materials from these items! Premium Members Dan Coplan Posted March 29, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 29, 2006 I just got the coolest Steadicam arm case one could imagine - and it only cost me $20! Not every army surplus store will have these, but Supply Seargent on Victory at Magnolia in LA has hard cases meant for carrying oxygen tanks. They're military green with some sort of German or Swedish text and the first aid cross painted on. I have a Steadyrig arm and it fits perfectly! I have to remove the arm post, but no biggie. To build in custom padded molding, I wrapped my arm in a towel and several plastic bags. I then laid the arm in the case and filled the bottom up to the arm with insulating foam that comes from a spray can (I think it's called Great Stuff or something like that). After drying I cut around the arm with something akin to a long exacto knife (Wal Mart - 88 cents), pulled out the arm, and let the rest of it dry. I then taped the whole thing with gaffer tape and voila! The next step is to add a simple piece of foam to the inside of the lid and holders for my various arm tools that I'll mount to the lid or work into the foam mold. This case also has two snaps with holes for putting small padlocks. What more could you ask for? At the same store I also got a top loading nylon(?) bag with zipper, snaps, and handles for my PRO vest, also for $20 and also a perfect fit. I cut out cardboard to give it shape and mild protection. I found one of these last year at a discount store & bought it. While going through receipts with my accountant the other week, I got a funny look. "I guarantee you, it will never see turkey; write it off," was my response. As for all the hard cases for the arm???? I have a Pelican vault for shipping my Klassen vest & PRO arm (in its padded bag), but to use a hard case on a daily basis for your arm, seems like overkill. I have to agree with Alec about using a hard case for the arm on a daily basis. I use a pelican to ship my Klassen Harness and PRO arm. When I am on set I just use the bag the arm is in. I believe it was $120.- but it was worth it, everybody thought I had a PRO Arm... I know pathetic. My Arm use to travel inside my PRO Vest in a Pelican 1650.
