Guest sebastian matthias
hi everybody ! i have a question about the strada crane and how it works. most will have seen the picture of an operator hanging on a hook off the strada crane (a funny picture.as i remember he has a red helmet on, wich probably would not save his life if he falls down ;-) ) Is there anyone of you who worked with the STRADA-crane? how does this hook work and especially how is it unlocked when the operator touches the ground ? Please give me some input for my little brain. All the best to you all! sebastian
Premium Members Jason Torbitt Posted December 11, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 11, 2005 I've not seen the Steadicam harness part in operation, but I've seen the Strada Crane operating- and it's very impressive, even just with a hot head on the end of it. The only camera crane that's 100ft long. It has a massive reach, the base of the thing is fantastic. A 2 man job to get the thing moving. It's used a lot over here for OB's and live productions and concerts.
Guest sebastian matthias
hey jason ! thanks for the reply ! i think most of the time its used for tv-shows over here ,too.i´ve been on the strada page and there´s this picture of the operator hanging of the strada, but the picture is really bad quality.hanging an operator on a crane should not really be a problem, but releasing....? if you work close to a strada again, could you ask the operator how that works? that really woul interest me! thank you! cheers Sebastian PS: anyone else out there with some STRADA-input? hey jason ! thanks for the reply ! i think most of the time its used for tv-shows over here ,too.i´ve been on the strada page and there´s this picture of the operator hanging of the strada, but the picture is really bad quality.hanging an operator on a crane should not really be a problem, but releasing....? if you work close to a strada again, could you ask the operator how that works? that really woul interest me! thank you! cheers Sebastian PS: anyone else out there with some STRADA-input? Premium Members Jason Torbitt Posted December 13, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 13, 2005 Hi Sebastian, I've got to say it doesn't look too comfortable to operate with a Steadicam up there, but it must be a great experience (and good fun). From what I understand it is a quick release system, so in theory you can hold the frame while the techicians release you and then continue the shot after you have been craned down to earth. I love the helmet the operator is wearing - health and safety first of course - but I'm sure that would REALLY help if he fell to the ground from 60ft in the air! :D If I can find out anything I'll let you know. They also used the Strada itself for the Formula 1 at Indianapolis last year, too.
Phil Reilly
While flipping through a "behind the scenes" picture book for an American TV show "Desparate Housewives", I saw a photo of the Steadicam operator hanging from a Strata crane. I too, thought that it looked dangerous, no matter how many safeties he was clipped into. It seems to me (I'm a grip, not an operator) that a standing platform style crane would be better for stepping on (or off) of. What crane did Kenneth Branaugh use in Italy for the final shot of "Much ado about nothing"? Have you seen the shot? It's a "step on" type shot. -Phil Boston, USA
Premium Members Jason Torbitt Posted December 13, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 13, 2005 Virtually all step-on step-offs seem to be usually done on platform style cranes; much easier and the short can continue for longer uninterrupted. Another issue is wind when operating at any great height. The Strada crane option means you are completely exposed to the wind; if you are standing on a crane there will at least be the sides to offer some protection from wind. It would still be a good experience to try out the Strada though, it looks to be a fascinating invention.

PaulEdwards
Phil, The "Much Ado About Nothing" end shot was done using a multi section 'cherry picker' type crane with a step on platform. I spoke to Andy Shuttleworth (the operator) not long after he'd done it and remember him commenting on the rough transition as the extending sections of the crane 'kicked in' as he went up. There was a BBC documentary made called "Chasing the Light" which featured that shot. I think it ended up as an extra on one edition of the DVD, if anyone's interested. You can just spot the top of the crane up above the hedging as the shot follows the actors through the doors, out of the house. Paul

Here's a video I found some time ago on the web, can't remember the name of the Op, maybe someone will recognize him, anyway the video is impressive and the touchdown is perfect, enjoy : http://homepage.mac.com/klavaullee/Steadicam/ From the title of the video it's for a Tiger Woods commercial, he's wearing a PRO sled in Low-mode, the camera is a 435.
