Premium Members geoff shotz Posted February 21, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 21, 2006 dude, that looks so much better on the imax screen than in real life. where do you put your balls when you climb like that? do they go in your backpack? do they fit in a backpack when they are that big? just wondering. geoff
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted February 23, 2006 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted February 23, 2006 I get serious shrinkage just looking at that picture -- I think that is only slightly safer than flying in helicopters. the application I submitted was for the first few days in June (alternate/2nd choice the last week in June). Hopefully I will get a permit -- keep your fingers crossed. RB
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted March 15, 2006 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 15, 2006 just an update -- still waiting on the Forest Service to give me the go/no go. There are plenty of other mountains if this one doesn't work out. Ron B
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted March 27, 2006 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 27, 2006 I just heard back from the Forest Service -- got the permits for 5 for Whitney. June 1 entry. Probably drive up the day before, hike/camp the 1st, 2nd, come down/drive back the 3rd or 4th. RB
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted March 28, 2006 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 28, 2006 For those of you interested (I hope some will actually make it, it's not easy to reserve spots) the Whitney trail is pretty easy -- it's just the altitude that really gets you. But since we are all burly steadicam ops in tip-top physical condition, I'm sure we will have no problems. Some of the basics you'll need: a tent, a bag (at least a 30 deg), a pack (for 3 days, 3000 to 5000 ci), good comfy boots, and comfy warm cloths as there will most likely still be a good deal of snow this early in the season. Ice ax, crampons might be a good idea as one never really knows what to expect. A bear container or two among the group for the chow would be a good idea. A warning, I suck as a cook. I'd love to start hearing who's in so I can call others off the list and fill the spots. I haven't asked Tom Gleason yet, but I promised him the last time I went I'd include him. He has lots of experience so he'll be good to have along...besides, he's an AC so we can eat him if things go Donner on us. Give me a call or chime in here. I don't have time right now, but asap I'll post some pictures from last year so you'll know what to expect ( Ron B 818-427-3041
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted March 31, 2006 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 31, 2006 uh oh...2 days gone by and only heard from BJ. Seems he'd rather feed his family than bag a peak. Chris, Geoff, Dan, Jason, Anthony and Matt...what up? It's only 2 months away -- not alot of time to quit smoking, ween oneself off crack, steal the right gear and aquire a fondness for cliff bars. jasondittmer
Hey Guys, I don't think that June 1 will work for me. My sis is getting married. Now I know that Steadicam ops are notorious for being gearheads, and I am no exception, but if anyone needs anything i.e. sleeping bags, pads, tents, stoves, ropes, crampons, jumars, ice axes, oxygen tanks, sherpas, or yaks. I've got em. So if I can't go I would be happy to help outfit "Whitneyfest 2006" On Belay, Jason D

Premium Members Tom Gleason Posted April 8, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 8, 2006 Thrown my hat in....I'm planning to spend the next couple months tenderizing....er...I mean training. I realize that an AC is lower on the totem pole...But, if you eat me, who'll carry your rig? Premium Members geoff shotz Posted April 9, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 9, 2006 ron- been so busy feeding my family that i haven't had time to respond. i think those dates work perfectly for me. count me in. my only question is, if b.j. isn't there, who's gonna play the female parts in the campfire plays? jim has a beard, tom's too tall, you organized the trip, anthony's too good with a knife. that leaves....me?!?! damn. maybe i can pay b.j.'s rent instead. talk to you when i return from spokane. geoff
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted April 9, 2006 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted April 9, 2006 cool Geoff, looks like it's me, Tom, Geoff. I've offered one of the spots to a hiking buddy of mine -- he's 50/50 on wether he can go or not. So there's one more spot available for sure -- maybe two if my friend can't make it. I've got 3 people at work begging me to go so let me know soon if anyone want the last spot. rb
Premium Members Matt Petrosky Posted April 9, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 9, 2006 Ron, Geoff, et al, Sorry for the delayed response... I head into my 12th consecutive day of work at 6am tomorrow, good for the bank, bad for sleep and my mental capacity--which has been reduced to that of a two years old boy. I am interested and think those dates will work perfectly... I however have little to no gear, what I had I left back east before I landed on the left coast. I do have a good pair of boots and I might give up my crack habit to prepare my lungs for the journey. -Matt
