Steadicam in Brazil

Recommended Posts

Howdo fellas,

I'm off to Brazil on Monday for an exclusive soccer series for the World Cup.

Production have been told horror stories about the customs there, and that they like to confiscate equipment.

Has anyone had any bad experiences in Brazil, San Jose?

Cheers,

Chris

apparently doing a carnet doing it legitimately takes around 3 months and u have to bounce paperwork regarding serial numbers etc to the embassy on the understanding you have a work visa of sorts.

If your going in a bit moodier, make sure you have "hired" all your kit from another comapany... i.e. MK-V and its not your kit!

What they are worried about in Brazil is your going to sell it. Import tax is sky high hence the cost of laptops/ipods over there. Do what you can to convince them it s not going to be sold. But apparently customs don t speak such good english... maybe getting letters from the production company in portuges?

My mates been there 8 times with loads of cameras and the hollywood lite rig i sold him ages ago and never had a propblem. Maybe he s lucky.

Good luck

I was in San Paulo in December of 2004 on an international corporate job and at that time they did not accept ATA Carnets nor do they recognize the Corporation for International Business. I wound up using a production company in San Paulo to provide gear as the importing service we wanted to hire to get the gear in would have cost more than local rentals. If you can rent it there it beats schlepping it through airports.

I also remember production having a hard time getting Visas for us and having to get the Visa service to visit the consulate three different times before they got the paperwork right.

Your best bet is to keep this a production company problem.
