peli 1660 for the rig

i dont remember the type i thing peli 1750 for the arm and plates

peli 1550 for batterys ,charger , accesories ,dv recorder and a back up lcd monitor

daniels vest case include inside the bartech case(including two mottors) and a litle bag with tools

also sometimes i take another custom case with a fox follow focus system and a (back up or for iris) (i can put the fox in the big case but i use to keep it is as set bechause i borrow it in other operators )

and of course the c stand

I'm flying today with three cases and a carry on.

carry on with batteries (I know but I've done it before successfully)

 

Say a prayer that all arrive with me and pay the excess.

 

All my cases weigh in at less then 60lbs, of course most airlines have changed to a 50lbs policy. LAX is sympathtic and have passed me without overwt charges but not necessarily so with other airports.

Last time I flew, I had eight cases and a cart. Six were allowed (three each for myself and an assistant). When they were going to bill for the extra items, I grabbed my battery case (Pelican 1550) and put it in the "carry-on items must fit in here" bin. The airline people looked horrified and asked me what was in it, so I showed them. They then offered to check it at no cost (which is what I was hoping they'd say since the case weighs a ton).

Batteries look like bombs. Cylindrical packs with wiring attached, circuit board and a connector? Holy crap. Of course they offered to check it for free.

 

For many years I hand carried my arm and vest softbag. The arm X-Rayed rather alarmingly, to explain I had a b&w glossy brochure for the Steadicam III, with GB on the front. One glance told them what the vest and arm were, and they rarely if ever made me remove them for examination.

 

This was pre-September 11th. Now, nothing of that ilk. I check the Mini.

You said it; not me, but yes, I was thinking this too. It was no accident this was the case I chose for carry on!

 

I still carry a brochure to the airport as well.

Oh, sorry man. It was a fun afternoon. Some time spent upstairs at the behest of Mr. Lyman, the rest spent on the floor, tooling around in a Mini and eyeing the Artemis ( which kept being strapped into people who had never worn a rig before- they bent, they squatted, they blew out many important reproductive organs.......).

 

Might be time to try to arrage a NY Dinner?

Well I made it there and back with carry on batteries. My batts are A-B and the info printed on them confirms what they are used for. Of course the scanner always kicks your bag out for hand check so you get to spend a little quality time with airport security (don't try to help them, answer politely and have plenty of time before your flight so there is no pressure). All cases arrived and returned but it is a little nerve-racking.

I'm at 5 cases, a crummy little cart (but it works and is lightweight and compact), and my stand (have yet to find a traveling case for the stand).

 

1. Sled case holding sled, plates, backup monitor, power/run cables, and screws, etc.

2. Battery case: Quad charger and 9 batteries

3. Pelican 1610? Holds separate small cases for BFD, Titan wireless video, Transvideo LCD, soft case for Supacam, soft case for backup Coherent, and lid organizer for variety of stuff

4. Arm case

5. Soft vest case

 

Peter - thanks for including the tip about carrying an ad showing what an arm and vest are. I'm flying (airplane flying, that is) today and want to carry on my vest and arm - concerned about their reaction.

Hey Dan,

 

Might I respectfully suggest that you combine the vest/arm bag? It's worked for many of us over the years. A padded sleeve for the arm, slip it into the vest bag or vest case. Either way, that arrangement allows for a LOT of the non-expensive stuff to be crammed in.

 

Long day? Spare clothing, t-shirts. Running? Put your kneepads in there. Sucking up to Production? Put your custom silkscreened swag in there. :)

 

Also, spare batts and other goodies if you are driving and not flying. Everyone "nests" differently with their gear, but it might allow you to cut out one case. Just a thought.

 

Glad you've dove in so deeply, I knew when I met you last autumn that you were already addicted.
