What would your perfect LCD monitor include?

When I called Boland to ask about production of their 6.5 HD, the person who answered told me that it was no longer being produced. They said there was no lack of demand. According to this person, they discontinued it because they couldnt get the kind of performance they wanted from the available lcd panel.

 

Boland seems to be a competent engineering company. How will you be able to overcome the problems they had with this available lcd screen if it is in fact the one you are proposing to use? Is this the same screen the Marshall people use? Despite a bunch of folks clamoring to buy they refuse to try to make it into a brighter screen.

 

Perhaps before we continue to make wish lists of features we should have more assurance that it is possible to make a usable ultrabright screen from this lcd. Maybe it would be a good idea for you to obtain a panel and test bed it, to find out if you can actually do this.

 

Just waiting for antigravity....

The technology exists and has for some time, it is just a matter of acquiring it for a specific application. Ultra-bright is a good thing, but it is not the ultimate consideration for full daylight viewability. An additional problem with panels, such as Boland's 2150 nit unit, is the fact that, the brighter the screen, generally speaking, the shorter the life of the unit. If one is paying $5000 for an LCD, one expects to get more than 2000 hours of operation off of it, and for that level of brightness, it is not likely.

I don't believe you ever acknowledged this info because you later asked about connectors. If you plan on making such a big run, I'd hate to see the wrong connectors on there! Also, you never got back to me if it were feasible to make that small HD booster.

Most of the non-LCD things, such as connectors, housing, etc will be done by a company with experience in Steadicams. This will be a joint venture between 2 companies.

I spoke with him about a week ago after he found this thread here. I got an e-mail addy that does not seem to work. He said that his company had been building CRT's for steadicams for about 15 years and he was interested in monitors that can achieve the same thing as CRT's but has been unable to find them.

 

Now, there aren't that many CRT manufacturers out there, and I had his email, so I did not worry, at the mine about reaching him. It is likely that he is known here and that he will either contact me or that someone here knows how to get in touch with him.

I wonder if anyone is using this monitor? I know mk-v has got one modefied, but with the same resolution and brightness.

Just wondering about how it is compared to transvideo. I belive transvideo cine III got lower resolution and a only a 6 inch 4:3 screen, am I right?

I don't currently use this monitor, so my comments are third party, that being said, I do currently use the Transvideo Ultrabright 6.5" and I like it alot, I couple of my friends use the Boland 8.4 and they seem to like them accept they are huge. They bang into all kinds of stuff with those things. They draw more power than the transvideo and have a shorter life expectancy.

 

Mike over at Boland is sticking to his word saying he is still going to make the 6.5" NTSC/PAL/HDSDI daybright, but then again I have been asking him for it for two years now . . .LOL . . .

I got one 3 weeks ago as a back up monitor (and hd monitor) for my pro. I'm doing a low budget feature so I thought I would use it for the run of the show (4 weeks) and give it a good test. I'm on week 3 and so far the thing is amazing. I don't find it too big either. I like the extra size (I don't think it weighs any more) and color is kind of cool. I have a PRO battery module 2 and hytron 50's. I haven't had any problems with power usage.

 

If I were to fault it for anything it would be this, when the angle is set correctly for normal height and you do severe booming or tilting, you have a slight loss of picture quality because of the angle. Now every monitor (tube or LCD) has this issue on some level but the LCD seems to be more sensitive to viewing angle than the tube. That being said, it's only a slight issue and it shouldn't effect your operating significantly.

 

As for problems with sun and bright light hitting the monitor (something I was concerned about) it is not an issue. When they say 'Ultra bright' they mean it. That thing is crazy bright.

**A side note** I have had a PRO monitor for over ten years. I've never once needed a backup monitor. I did once show up to do a shoot in HD where (though I asked) they did not bring a dow converter. I spent the day with somebody walking next to me holding a reference monitor to operate off of. The Boland (apparently) understands HD so it's a handy monitor for that reason alone.

8.4" utlra bright (1400 nits, what ever the heck a nit is).....

 

was 3 grand plus a few bucks for an 8 pin lima connector so i could get power and signal from my PRO.

 

got it from boland and it took them a few weeks to build the monitor for me.

Hey Guys,

 

I'm new to the forum, but I've been in DVinfo, HBS, Reduser, a little, and in DVXuser forum alot. I've just created a monitor for my fellow DVXusers and after showing it to a veteran Stadicam Op, he suggested that I adapt it to a Steadicam Monitor.

 

I've just placed a call to my manufacturer's & distributers, and I'm working on updating my monitor to Steadicam Specs.

The Introductory Price would be around $3000-3500 (estimated) and the specs would be similiar to the one you see on my site.

 

• It would be over 1000nits (I'll see how bright I can make it)
  Check out the resolution 1024x768
  and the Viewing angle 170 degrees up and down
  the case would be twice as thick and I would have to look into weatherproofing it.
  I would provide the limo and the Hirose connectors.
  Also I would look into a second anti-glare for better sun readability

I'm working on the frameline, but would probably not have a digital level. I might add an analog level to the case.

As for weight, right now it is 3.1lb or so. but I would make the case even tougher for you guys, so who knows. But if I understand it correctly, you actually need it to have some weight to it to counter balance the camera? What would be ideal weight for this monitor?

I did post that I would have the two standard connectors for power (limo and hirose) I know that the current connector would be no good for the steadycam world.
