Premium Members GerryVasbenter Posted January 30, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 30, 2006 <_< I'm just about through my thrid soft arm bag with my Pro Arm, I'm thinking of making a more robust case to use on set (when ever the Arm is on top of a magliner it ends up bottom of the pile!) hanging on the stand is ok till I need to balance or some helpfull person tries to move the whole lot,rig,vest, arm,focus. I'm thinking maybe a laser cut hard foam block for a magliner, or somesort of hard foamed out tube mounted verticaly on the rig stand. what's out there? All sugestions welcome!! I don't know if they have any left, but you might want to check with GPI in case they have one in the back somewhere. We still have the foam pattern for this case. The arm bag in particular looks like a good purchase. I'm also quite taken with how well made it looks and seems to offer good protection for the arm when not in use. Premium Members Rich Cottrell Posted February 7, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 7, 2006 When I bought my PRO arm I was surprised by the lack of padding that the arm bag offered? so I added some extra padding myself. I bought a closed cell exercise pad and cut two pieces that would wrap around each section of the arm. Then I made two little snug pillow cases for these pads [with medium to heavy weight back fabric] and sewed a piece of female 2 inch velcro onto each pillow case. Then made some straps out of the matching 2 inch male velcro sewed them on as well. Then I stuffed these pads with the foam and sewed them shut. Now I have these nice looking and easy to take off pads that I wrap around the bones before I put my PRO arm into that soft case. There was plenty of room to accommodate the extra padding inside the GPI-PRO case and I like that these pads are right on the arm. When I am wrapping the gear, I wrap the pads on the arm while it is still hanging on the docking bracket, and then I slide the padded arm into the soft case. I also made a circular pad to fit on the bottom of the soft case to add extra padding to the bottom. I know this solution of mine will not lengthen the life of the soft bag but I do feel this makes the soft bag a little better for protecting a $20,000 investment. I have not been putting my gear through too much abuse, but so far I am on my first PRO soft case and my first set of pillow pads too. Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted April 24, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 24, 2006 I went through several stages of trying to find a place for my arm on set, that was safe, efficent and easy to get to as well as user friendly AND out of the way. I first used to lay my arm on top of my cart... Looked into cases to have it on the top of my cart... like the original PRO Arm case that they sold with the first batch of arms... Hung it in the Arm Bag (made by Patti for PRO) from my cart handle... I inquired about making a Leather shoot and bolting it (in a 45 degree angle), one on my cart and one on my stand... As it turned out the guy wanted $800.- each, just for a plain leather tub... and it would be 3 to 6 months... at least. I even bugged Walter Klassen... Finally when I was redesigning my cart (actually that was one of the main reason I went through all That) I wanted to dedicate a space to my Arm... (sorry that sounds like...) I ended up designing a case that would not only hold my Arm on set, but keep it tugged away until I needed it, was safe enough to be moved by anyone and ready to go in seconds... (the purk ende up beeing that i lso found space for all other odd shaped pieces of equipment like the Klassen vest, The Gorelock, the Shark fin antenna, etc). I made some pictures of my 1:1 prototype cardboard model. (i had to make one, because they did it wrong the first 2 times...) The Arm fits into the far right compartment. It will be leather lined and snug enough so that the arm does not rattle or gets scratched. It's in an angle so that it pulls it self into resting position, there is enough space that the arm will even fit with the J-bracket on. A lookable trap door will open downwards for the times when you shoot close to crowds and you can walk away without worry. Quick and easy to get in and out. The only drawback...it's too long to get through doorways when on the cart, so it needs to be taken off and layed on top of my battery case for moving through those tight spaces. Premium Members Dan Coplan Posted June 29, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 29, 2006 I just got an arm bag from Camera Essentials (reducing my cases from 4 to 3!) in LA. It seems to be very similar to those from Jerry Hill and Modular 51: padded black tube with a zipper top.
