Another Reel Critique

Hi folks,

I saw Afton's post about his reel, and thought I'd toss mine up to be shot down.

Here is the link http://www.fowlerfilms.com/movie.html

I think it's a tad to long, but what I'm wondering, is which shots to cut out?

My fulltime job doesn't give me enough time to do steadicam as much as I'd like, so I'd like my reel to be ass good as it can be.

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

hi bryan,

i'd agree and say that the reel is way too long. rate all your shots. 1-10. get rid of the 6 and anything below and put your 10's at the beginning. you have wasted time in there with little titles from some corporate shoot as well as brief shots that don't show your talent off at all. you have some good shots in there that showcase your ability. use them and throw them in the viewers face. dont make them remember your good shots by having to sift through mediocrity.

your opening shot feels like you are fighting the gimbal (grip?) there's a re frame in there as well. i'd say lose it from your opening. your following the horse shot is nice and level and smooth. maybe open with this? your last int plane shot seems like you hit the sled with your leg. bad bump. lose it. shots like these that fall below b grade...lose em!

seems like you do mainly corporate shootings, so maybe this length is ok. but i'd take quality over quantity any day. if the reel is only 1-2 min's long after you trim the fat, dont worry.

my 2 cents.

I agree with Matt. Too long and too many shots that you don't need on your reel.

It seems like you're over-controlling the rig a little. Loosen up a bit and trust yourself and I think your shots will get even better.

Overall, nice stuff.

Hi Bryan :D

One rule to go by is not to putt corporate stuff in your reel unless it's a commercials and stunning !

Music videos are cheap and easy to make (sometimes) and normaly loads of fun.

This will give your reel impact untill the features start coming in.

I know you can produce better work so i'm waiting to see it !

Ps not meaning this to sound nasty, but when in crituqe mode i don't focus on compliments.

Ok some really promising stuff their also, i liked the shot at the start over bed, just wish the chic had less clothes on :)

Thanks guys very much for the advice. I knew that I had a little to much in there, but was having trouble choosing which clips to take out. I'll be working on it tomorrow in the middle of working on storyboards.

I do have a clip from a Barlow Girl Music video, but the raw footage is still on it's way.

Hey Matt,

Are you saying to take out the corporate stuff? I work full time for a corporation, so that's why there is a lot of it on the reel. FowlerFilms is my side project, but I would love to be able to produce and direct more than just what I do now.

What about corporate videos make them undesireable on your reel?

Again, thanks very much for taking the time, and sharing experience.

Depends on what market you want to work in i guess.

I just don't like it personaly.

A show reel wants to be about 1 to 3 mins of mind blowing stuff !

It's not quite that simple in practice but trust me when you see a good one you'l know what i mean.

Steadicam is all about feeling the shots just as much as doing set moves.

Feel it !

Feeeeeel it goooooood lol

Making a real is not easy. Getting the raw footage is hell. It took me a full year to come up with a reel. So i made a musicreel, and now i am gonna make a drama/small feature reel. So if your client is looking for a music op ore commercial ore feature op, he can make his desicion with one to watch. Is this making any sence at all?

Nice reel btw bryan :P

Thanks everyone for the help.

I went through and cut more, and trimmed more.

Changed the opening shot to what I thought was a good one.

totally removed some shots.

Are there any shots that anyone sees that should be taken out totally?

Again, thanks for the help. =)
