Weight plates for Flyer

Hello to all,

My name is David and I work with a 12V Flyer mainly on student productions at SC. Mostly I've been working with the a-minima, so weight hasn't been a problem. I have some HDV stuff to shoot in March, and I'm looking for suggestions as to where to pick up machined weights, suitable for the smaller cameras (DVX100, Z-1, etc.) Any tips would be appreciated, and my gratitude to whomever puts the time and effort into running this online resource.

Do you run a FF unit (Bartech, Preston, Genio)? You may not need weights, the DVX is pretty beefy.

I you're looking for machined weights in L.A., try Modern Studio Equipment. I had them make a weight to compensate and match the look of pre-existing gear. Looks really tight. They are located at:

Try mounting the camera normally with the low-mode handle clamp attached (if you have one). Now mount a weight plate on top. The higher cog keeps the camera closer to the gimbal.

You could do that or go to a metal fabrication house and asked them to make you some dumb lbs and have a diagram of what you want. It cost me about 125 to make the cage. I can use mine for both the dvx or the xl series but what I did was made the cage so it could dettach (2 separate plates). Hope this help you.

Thanks for the advice. Bob, I'm cutting my teeth and most of my setups (all 4 of them) have been very simple, and I've never actually worked with any FF devices. Soon though! Chris, thanks for the balancing tips, that set-up never occurred to me. Nikk, are you talking about a cage that is separated by four posts like a practice cage?

I appreciate the info guys. I'll contact Modern as David suggested.

For our Pro we have a 5kg steel plate which we screw in between the dovetail plate and the camera which works pretty well.

 

When using Flyers or similar smaller rigs, I have about 1kg - 2kg of lead flashing and some gaffer tape. Last job with the Flyer I had a PD150 for one setup and a DVX100 for another. The lead we had gaffer taped to the handle of the PD150 and on the DVX100 we had a little camera light, powered through the rig which gave it just enough more weight to help us out.

You don't even need a diagram. Just bring the item you need to have a custom plate made for and Cino will take care of you.

I called Cino just as you suggested. He told me to come in anytime. Thanks for the advice everyone.

By the way, the gaffer-tape-to-the-handle-using-the-low-mode-bracket-and-cheap-electrical-plates-as-weights works like a charm for anyone needing a $10 solution. Thanks for the quick fix James!
