In my opinion in 15 years of operating I would say the best sled made is The Ultimate by Greg Bubb at XCS, best arm is by GPI PRO, best vest is between Klassen and PRO and best focus for the money is Bartech. I ve never seen one at a show or knocking about round a mates or anything. I keep hearing such praise about them I would love to see what all the fuss is about. Is there any definite leader among them? Personaly i think the best rig is the rig you own and mod ! You can take your pick of any of the top makes but you will only realy appreciate what a steadicam is untill you own or use one on a regular basis. I fell in love with my steadicam flyer as a first rig. I doubt it would have been much different if i had gone for a cheaper clone. I would say Tiffen seems to have done wounders with their new G arms, MK-V (and friends) with the AR and other bling, and many more the quality of choice is imense. It might help to understand where you are coming from with the question though. arch-b Posted February 21, 2006 Author Report Share Posted February 21, 2006 I mean what is your reason for asking are you a woking DOP or just a curios onlooker perhaps ? -matt Matt, there is a little curiousness involved in my question, no doubt, but another reason is that I recently bought Glidecam's Smooth Shooter/4000 (a system at the bottom of the hierarchy, perhaps) and have serious plans to improve my "steadicam" skills to apply it to my upcoming projects (a few of my screenplays require some serious stedicam movements, and my budget doesn't allow me to hire a pro). But I know it costs me work because it?s not a brand that the production companies recognize when they call. Plus I made the classic mistake of thinking as it cost me a lot less than the equivalent Steadicam brand rig I should put its rate out for less. ?Oh it?s cheaper? What?s wrong with it?? They are good, and I'm not the only one who thinks that way... More importantly, both screepts are short (even minimalistic in a way) and easy to produce. I'd say, both are aimed mainly at film festival path to generate a positive noise. Future, more commercially oriented projects are to come... Anyway, one of those screenplays definitely needs extensive steadicam shots as there are lot of scenes seen from the protagonist's point of view, so I'll put SS/4000 to the test for that one.
