video transmitter

I was on a show recently (come to think of it, Charles, it was the one you stopped by while you were in NYC) where not only the sound mixer was watching the Modulus, his boom op had a small watchman on his wrist via a wrist band. Likewise, I know ACs who strap a small monitor to the remote focus, so they are better able to time their pulls on some shots. I'm continually amazed at who shows up with hand held monitors (something to keep in mind when you are standing around by the rig - make sure that transmitter is off because who knows who will see you!).

On HD jobs, when forced to run a wire, I've still flown the Modulus so the masses can see on other monitors.

Of course a solution when using a microwave or FM transmitter/receiver system if you also own a Modulus is to attach the Modulus to the output of one of the monitors at video village to broadcast to all the hand-held monitors on set. I have actually done this to receive an image on a small TV I mount on my sled for return video feed for live TV shoots.

in my van i have an other 12db antenna on the roof. this feeds the signal to my laptop running cctv motion detection software. so it only records when its transmitting and i can review practise or takes afterwards

That´s interesting.... can you tell us how-what program, what do I need to make it work?

One of the nice things about the Modulus is the ability to hand the DP or Director a small hand held Watchnman TV.

.....

or shooting. What do you do in these situations (and they seem frequent) with microwave matched transmitter/receiver units?

You could give them one of those receiver-lcd´s with the 1,2 or 2,4 receiver build in, weights about 400 grams without battery.

Sold by the dozen in Bangkok, made in Taiwan I think.

yeah rob

there s loads of freeware/shareware cctv capture software that turns your webcam into a cctv camera... recording only when theres motion (or a period after) ... motion seems to be a very comon trait in a lot of my shots...........

so basically u tell your computer that your new video feed is your webcam. u can use a real inexpensive usb capture card like that winTV one. composite to USB.

heres one example... im still experimenting with which one i prefer etc

http://www.pysoftware.com/ActiveWebCamMainpageGoogle.htm

and that one takes firewire... so u just have an extra antenna - receiver - then composite to USB card or an Analogue to digital firewire converter (i use my pd150). into the computer.. play about with the settings. and hey presto

Hello All,

Could someone explain the difference between the Modulus 2000 and the Modulus 3000. I was just looking at a 2000 for sale but didn't know if it was worth considering for a Masters rig???? I use a single cannel now and have two others as back up , they all work great, but I have always wondered about why we hear so much about the 3000 and nothing about the older brother the 2000.

Thanks in advance,

Alan Mehlbrech

Modulus 2000 versus Modulus 3000

The easiest way to tell them apart is that on the outside the word Modulus 2000 is Yellow and the 3000 is Green. Also the 2000 has no Heat sink as the 3000 gets way hotter and needs one.

The main difference between the both is the power output.

Modulus 2000 - .250 Watt (- .950 Watt or more)

Modulus 3000 - .750 Watt (or less)

Range:

2000 - 250 yard (with booster up to 10 Miles)

3000 - 500 yard

As the 2000 was the first one build by CIT, the outputs and ranges wary very much. They where sold as .250 Watt but more then once I saw them put out way more than 1 Watt. Depended on the day they where made and what components they put in (it seamed), they out perform the 3000.

Also a regular 2000 is 12 Volt only unless upgraded, but that is only necessary if you power the unit from a 24 Volt Camera Body.

The other difference is that you can use a Booster with the 2000 but not with the 3000.

The Modulus 2000 Power Booster:

It's basically a second Modulus with a huge Heat sink that is daisy chained to the 2000 and raises the output of "Field" to way over 1 Watt. (2000 output is .250 Watt) It's good for transmission up to 10 Miles used mostly for Helicopter work or to penetrate a Concrete building (and radio it down... I guess).

Not very many made it into the field, as the 3000 was introduced shortly after. It's a rare item and only works with the 2000.

It comes down (again) to preference I know a couple of operators that love the 2000 and threat the day that there unit get's damaged or they have to upgrade... the 2000 is quite easely "upgraded" to 3000 specs. But after all the work it ends up being the same price like a new 3000.

Hope that answers your question.

BTW: The last time I checked, there were 7 versions of the 3000 and 5 versions of the 2000 over the years, plus design and hardware changes...

The biggest difference would be the 2000/3000V (Video) that has also sound transmission and time code but comes as 12 Volt only and the 2000/3000F (Film) which only transmits Video but has over Voltage protection up to 30 Volts. The Video is usually ~$300.- more...

Got to run...

Thomas English:

The method you are describing for recording your footage for future use sounds really cool but somewhat convuluted compared to just recording onboard the rig, which also lets you review your work between takes to make it better...? Are you unsatisfied with onboard recorders or choose not to use them for a particular reason? I'm just curious.

yeah.... i hate rewinding... i have to do it all day when im editing and hate it.... this method youve no tape.. u can dock the rig and go straight to the laptop and look at the last take compare it to the take before instantly. have both takes up on screen playing simultaneosly. whithin seconds. seperate takes (and thus avi s or mpegs) by always putting the lenscap/mattbox so u have a black image. its not actually that complicated. i just turn my laptop on and plug it in its all setup in my van. recording away when it need s to.

its a pain in the arse having another piece of kit on your rig u have to think about if its on and recording. this just records when it needs to stops when it doesnt. u can use it all day and only at the end decide u want to check something

i like it. hate rewinding... vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.. what timecode was it? vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

hate it

I throw the following link out there just to stir things up:

Ramsey Electronics video transmitter

This is the current version of the transmitter Peter Abraham used to rave about. Certainly you can't beat the price. If I ever get a minute I'm going to order one just for fun.
