Great site Afton.

I hope the copyright issues don't cause a problem. It may be worth adding in the introduction that the site is completely non-profit making. To me it appears more of a sign of admiration than an attempt to profit from other's work but I hope the copyright owners feel the same way.

Thanks, Mike. You're exactly right. It is a site for admiration and information. I thought about talking about the site being free on the home page. I decided against it. I really wanted to make the site as USER friendly as possible. As it is, users generally don't read a lot of copy on websites. They want to get to the point of the site. If my only reason for moving that information to the front page was to hopefully appease any copyright owners, it is bringing down the user experience, and just not worth it, in my opinion.

I speak of the non-profit nature of the site in the "About" section. If a copyright owner wants to give me a hard time, they'll likely do it regardless of where the information is, if it is anywhere at all. If that happens, I'll deal with it then. Until that point, I just hope everyone can enjoy it as much as possible.

Eric, great suggestions. I'll try and get Contact in there next week. And yes, even if I lose all footage, the references will still be in there. I didn't think the timecodes would be necessary since the only way to truly see the shots in context would be to watch the entire films. However, you make a good point about the case of me losing the actual shots. I'll give it some further thought.

I think I am going to leave out a "submitted by" field. I've already received suggestions for the same shots, or same films from multiple people and I don't want to try to choose who gets the credit. I also don't want to have the possibility of confusing the "submitted by" credit with the "operated by" credit. I know it seems obvious, but I've worked in web development for a long time and you'd be surprised what confuses people sometimes.

Thanks to everyone that has given suggestions and feedback. Keep it coming!

Best,

Afton

Your site is excellent .

Maybe if the operators have the behind the scene of some shots , photo or video you can put it on the site near the shot .

That?s just a idea , your work on the site is already a big time I think .

Thanks for this site Amgrant . :)

Just a suggestion - which in a way I don't like - but you could make the site password access only. No need to be secretive about the password - it could be freely available to users of this forum. But that way it's less open to the general public and not search engine indexable - so copyright owners may be somewhat less concerned about footage being easily accessible by the whole world!

Or you could just leave it as a possible compromise if the copyright police knock on the door...

Afton,

THANKS...It's a great learning tool to watch some of the greatest Steadicam Shots Over and Over.

I enjoyed watching everyones work but Dan Kneece was the instructor at my Workshop about 14 years ago. His foot was in a cast so we where not able to watch him operate. He had Peter Abraham and Travis Jackson running around with rigs. Its nice to be able to log on to your site to watch his work.

Hey Dan how is the foot.

Hey Guys,

I'd love to get some behind-the-scenes photos and video. I'm trying my best to get in communication with the credited ops on the site. Most of them are understandably quite busy - most likely making more footage for the site! I trust they'll get to it when they can. When they do, I'll certainly ask if they have anything else to pass along.

Eric, I'm going to do my best to keep the site password free. I just want it to be simple, and non exclusive. I know what you are saying about protecting the footage. I do want it to be available to the general public, however. I'd really love it for someone to visit, not knowing just what goes into some of these shots, and leave with an entirely new respect for the operators and rest of the crew that make these films possible. Again, regarding the copyright police, password or not, if someone really wants to give me a hard time, they will no matter what.

More to come!

Afton

Good day everyone,

Just wanted to let you know there is a new section to the SteadiShots website entitled Steadi-media. Basically it'll be a place for media that is not of an official production nature, yet still relates to the world of Steadicam.

Please keep the suggestions coming. I am working on updating the content all the time. Anybody that has any submissions of their own, please let me know also. My best thanks to everyone that has contributed so far. The site has really grown since its beginning.

Hope you enjoy the new look, too!

Best,

Afton Grant

Hey Everyone,

Thanks again for all the praise. I'm very glad everyone seems to like it. The music video thread on this site in General Discussion is getting a lot of great action. I would love to get some more music videos up on SteadiShots.

I wanted to let you know I've added a User Submission File Upload function to the site. In addition to the ability to suggest shots, there is now the ability to upload the actual files--if you have them on your computer, of course.

The preferred format is Quicktime, since it is most compatible with both Mac and PC platforms. However, any WMV, AVI or MPEG file is acceptable as well. There are suggestions regarding compression and encoding on the site.

Should anybody use it and have any problems or questions, please let me know. I know the storage and transfer of large files on the web can be annoying sometimes. I hope this will help. As always, suggestions for anything are welcome.

Best regards,

Afton Grant

Greetings and Happy New Year!

For all iPhone users out there, I wanted to announce the launch of the first version of the Mobile SteadiShots - optimized for iPhones. Any device may access it and reference the information - a good tool for when you're out and about and suddenly wonder, "Who shot that?" The shots themselves are only viewable with the iPhone, as I understand it anyway. I don't have a collection of active devices on which to test it, so if anyone finds differently, please let me know. A WiFi connection is definitely recommended. I'm working on re-exporting all shots again as cellular versions, so WiFi won't be as necessary. That is not yet complete.

Only shots that I previously had in Quicktime format could be exported in iPhone format (why Apple made the iPhone unable to view Quicktime natively is beyond me). There are a handful of shots on the site in Flash, or YouTube format, which were not able to be converted.

iPhone folks may simply type in www.steadishots.org and you should be automatically taken to the mobile version. Anyone else, may type in www.steadishots.org/m which will take you to the same place.

I'm still considering this a beta version of the mobile site. Until I get good feedback, or at least the lack of bad feedback, I'll keep testing. Please feel free to contact me with comments, problems, bugs, etc.

Thanks very much. Enjoy!!

-Afton
