Chas,

love to stop buy and say howdi -- we are back on the 3rd, let's get lunch sometime (cheap-ass Disney locks the crafty truck at lunch, so maybe I'll drop by for a pb+j...if my truck will fit on your street?).

Great to hear your work on the house is starting -- congrats. I will finally get going on some work on my house in the next month or so (waiting on permits) so we'll have to get together and make fun of each other for the amount of $$ we are spending.

I'll also have to drop off a Coherent reciever for your continued enjoyment...uh amusement.

Ron

The tendency is to use microwave at the deregulated frequencies of 1.4GHz or 2.4GHz. The 1.4 is clearly well away from the Preston but interference from the 2.4GHz is also rare (due to the technology used in the Preston).

Robin, i found that my Preston destroys all the available video channels, specially when the assistant is between the operator/steadicam and video/village which is almost always the case. It creates black and/or white bands on the screen. The Preston has no or not much interference from the 2,4 ghz video transmitter, luckily and probably due to it's multispectrum system (that kills the video ;) )

So probably 2,4 for FF en 1,2-1,4 for video is the way to go.

(Untill that cloggs up with all kinds of @#$&*)

I'm working on a show at Prospect Studios, Hollywood (ABC) and word has come when the mixer told him we were using mudulus on the set. Now we have recieved official memos from the lot as well as Disney brass forbidding their use.

Do you have a copy of the memo??? Is it just going to be in the studio or on all The Mouse's shows?

Thanks,

sorry, I do not have a copy of the memo...I'll try to get one. A word about the Coherent pkg we got...it sucks ass. I am using a tiny "spy xmitter" from Wolf Seeberg (about 1 inch square, 1/8 inch thick, cable channel 59) and it realy works well. Did I mention the Coherent sucks?

Ron,

This might be a good opportunity for you to try out the Canatrans and let the rest of us know how it works. I'm guessing somebody in town rents them? I'm interested to hear a report on the Canatrans from someone using it in a real world situation.

Technically Ron that is still a UHF transmitter, somewhere just below channel 14 on an analog receiver. Really low power though. The good news is Charles may still be able to monitor your work from his porch.

Was the Coherent setup the diversity receiever with matched transmitter?

Am I the only operator using Marells Video link..?

I can only say that my Modulus is collecting dust in the "back-up" flightcase....

For me it has worked perfect for 2 years know....

It is small, rigid and very stable... I dont know the price range of other systems, but I wouldn´t change for anything in the world

All the best

ps. I dont work for Marell, nor am I .... bla bla bla.....

we had the diversity recievers and what seemed to be the mack-daddy of all antennas. Wolf came out and set up quite a spectacular array of devices that looked quite impressive -- I think we were picking up signals from space (just not the next room). In all fairness it did work ok as long as the camera didn't move...hmmm...maybe I should be posting this on the tripod forum?

As far as Marrel's xmitter, I've never heard of it. At this point I'll try anything to stay away from the dreaded hard-wire (then Chas couldn't have in-between hammering enjoyment).

Chas, the place looks great. We are on location Monday, but on stage the rest of the week. Speaking of stages...we actually burned one of ours up. Light box shorted out and burned down part of our set. Lots of smoke/soot. Good thing the pro is made out of metal.

Am I the only operator using Marells Video link..?

I worked last summer with a BBC crew, shooting a TV-series in Thailand and they brought such a system with them. A complete set, transmitter, receiver, extra antenna´s.

We used it alongside my "made in Taiwan" 1,2 Ghz transmitter and the outcome was not so good for the Marrell......

Conditions were ideal: open air/line-of-sight, far from any city and other interference.

I was moving with my Steadicam and the Marell was on the camera on sticks. The video man preferred the cheapo system for stability and reach......

Hi Ron;

Comments can be found at http://www.lentequip.com/products/canatrans.html, lots of them!

Otto's has them in LA, FYI.

Hi Rob;

As the Marell system is legal, it has to abide by the maximum transmitted power regulations for the band. I suspect the taiwan system you mention is illegal and is without a doubt, transmitting with far more power, because of this difference in power you will get more range. Legal :) or Illegal :( the choice is yours.

I know very well about that legal and illegal issue, I posted many times about that.

However, that is of no concern to the director, DP, producer. They just want a clear picture, stable and with a reasonable reach in transmission.

I was one of the first to adapt 2.4 Ghz legal transmitters for our use but found that they just cannot perform in our working situation.

So it means that you wil have to use illegal stuff, be it Modulus, Canatrans, or Taiwanees .

The risk of being arrested for using such a transmitter is very low, I still have to hear from one person who really got nailed. I heard stories, but never confirmed.

And really, the Marell did not deliver a proper image here over less than 25 meters. A cable would be better then......

Hi Rob,

I agree you sometimes have to use what works on the day, and not worry about the legal aspects of it.

The system you experienced must have been faulty as the Marell Video Link will cover many hundreds of metres. To not make 25metres would indicate a problem. The 1.394GHz system outputs more power than the 2.4Ghz system and I don't know which version you saw but either would have covered the distance very easily.

It's good to know no one has yet been confirmed as getting nailed hard by using an illegal system and lets hope it stays that way.

Kind Regards

Dave
