Hi Dave,

Long time....

I have a 2nd Modulus 3000, If you need one until yours is repaired. I bought it for that reason only... Charles used it for the 6 weeks (More like 10 weeks) that his was in repair...

Talk to you later,

Erwin

Out here in the hinterlands we can send any old signal..... Some folk have had problems on certain properties in LA... Thus microwave... The legal deal in US is a rather hefty fine if you are caught broadcasting TV without a broadcasters lic. Yea well everyone goes a little faster than those silly signs by the freeway proclaim the beach near where I live has a sign that says $500 fine for dogs caught on the sand! Don't know anyone who has paid..... any one out there have a lovely horror story??

I am really interested as to the whether anyone uses the modulus in England. 900Mhz is clearly the best frequency to send video.

However the law stands on illegal transmitters that the DTI can confiscate the transmiter and anything attached to it... i.e. your rig and productions camera !

what would be the detectable range of the modulus?

I believe that BandPro received a hefty fine from the FCC and was forced to stop selling the Modulus. Other than that I have not heard of anyone actually caught using it. I always enjoyed Wolf Seeberg's catalog that pictured the Modulus in use in Baja California--even though it is illegal to use in Mexico as well!

I set up a pirate radio station as a teenager. Bought the parts from an ad in the back of Popular Electronics. 5 watts and covered the neighborhood and our high school.

sure.... 5 w would cover that kind of area at the 100Mhz range . But 900Mhz is much higher so could have a much shorter range....

I would absolutely love to use a 900Mhz tx/rx but I just don t think I could risk it. Its fine with the bartech because all they could confiscate is your focus puller (as the lens controller does not transmit). But risking putting a 900Mhz TX on my sled is maybe very dodgy.

perhaps ill find some HAM radio forum s and enquire.

Bzzzt! Incorrect, but thanx for playing our game (what do we have for them, Johnny?)8-)

Band Pro was not fined, they were sent a letter that threatened a fine regarding their having listed the device on their web site. To my knowledge, nothing more than threatening letters have ever been FCC response. I think that the FCC has more important uses for their resources than prosecuting people for operating a device with a .5 mile range, especially a device with such widespread utility in a multi-billion dollar industry.

IANAL, but still.......

Extra credit: with maybe 4 vehicles in the US for triangulation/tracking, how many are in operation in Mexico? Do the math.

Hi,

Tested my new Modulus 3000 for the first time today but I couldn't get any good reception when moving. The setup was a Steadicam Ultra with a modulus 3000 on an Arri SRIII IVS. Receiver was a Transvideo Hermes. Location was an empty studio. I used it with and without a 6dB attenuator, no differens. The picture is very unstable and goes very dark in pretty regular intervals when moving.

What type of receivers do you guys use?

Will a directional antenna solve anything? The Hermes receiver is a singel antenna device, do I absolutly need a diversety receiver with multiple antennas? Any input from you modulus people would be very helpful, thanks

Peter,

I own both a diversity unit and a Hermes. Most of the time, I find I end up using the Hermes because it is more idiot proof (as far as people changing the channel by accident, etc). The Hermes works great so I don't think that is your problem. Try different channels as well as antennae cut to the frequencies you use the most often. Yes, a directional antenna should help on the receiver as well, but I'm often surprised at how well the one that comes with the Hermes works.

Hi,

I´ve used it on several "shot on video" TV-series and they work pretty good. There will be some breakeup in the signal when moving, especially when there is obsticals in between. I´m using it now on a s16 shoot and nobody has complaind yet... But eventually I will invest in a diversity system as that seems to be the only way to get rid of the breakups.

I will look into this when I get the time:

http://www.eiwa-es.de/Video%20Produkte/VATsystem.php

The thing that makes me suspicious is the low price: 1000 Euro (about US$ 1250) for both sender and diversity receiver, but if it works...

May I humbly suggest the CanaTrans at www.lentequip.com

Regards...

Lentequip

I don't think that here is the place to advertise a product by it's manufacturerer.

We already have enough advertising as it is on this website.

A product should be suggested by a fellow operator that used it... not by a manufacturerer that has alternative motives... to sell a product.

(And sorry, but most people will tell you anything to sell something.)

The question was to solve a modulus problem... not to replace it.

I have 2 modulee (spelling) they work fine for me. I know of people that can't stand them... the same thing with the canatrans. I know people that love it and some that don't. (I didn't have the chance to try it yet... on set, I played around with it...)

That is up to the individual to decide...

I don't see a reason to buy something for twice the money to get something that I already have... most of the time it's a problem with the antenna... wrong one or poor placement... wrong channel selection, bad or wrong receiver, etc.

My set up that most of the time works great:

Modulus 3000 (low serial number, no voltage regulator BS)

Rubber ducky antenna

XCS TR-1 receiver

CIT Sharkfin Antenna

So much from me,

Fly safe,

Erwin

Not totally true, The Modlus is a RF nightmare that is VERY poorly designed. There are units (lot's of Units) that no matter what antenna, channel and reciver you use you are still not going to get a usuable signal.

Having said that My Modulus 3000 is for sale. It was recently serviced by CIT East. Make me a offer...
