Mike Mastre
I have a PRO 1 sled with an Anton Bauer battery conversion, Transvideo monitor, and XCS PDL. I'm experiencing the battery shorting out and the display on the battery flashing if the BNC going in via right angle connection touches the vid/pwr lemo. Also, I am able to get a normal picture on my monitor until I plug a transmitter (Modulus or tx1000) in using the vid/pwr connection, then I lose the picture on my monitor until I unplug the cable. This occurs on all the lemo ports. Does anyone know what my be the cause of this? Also any leads on someone to repair it. I've tried e-mailing David Hable at Cramped Attic, but have not gotten a response yet. Thanks. Mike Mastre.
Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted March 23, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 23, 2006 If it was allright before, you probably have a loose hanging power cable somewhere, if this was always like this, there is definately some problem with "ground" and it is probably caused by the switching between 12 volts and 24 volts. When on 24 volts, the minus of one battery is not on ground anymore, but connected to the plus of the other battery If at the same time, through an accessory like a video assist (almost always 12 volt), this combined + and - from the 2 batteries is connected to ground again, you get a short circuit. The only good way to get around this is , is using: A) 3 batteries, 2 for the 24 volt camera and the third for the 12 volt accessories only, but still take care of the ground here! B ) 2 batteries for 24 volts AND a converter that brings this back to 12 volt, these converters can be found in stores for boat-accessories and are not too expensive, high efficient and can supply around 10 amps or more. They have their ground and power output disconnected from the normal ground and input, which might be a problem too in some situations , however, in my system this ground is connected again to the real ground and has not given me any problems, ever. C ) If you want to use 2 batteries and still be able to feed 12 volt and 24 volt stuff at the same time, you just have to be sure that the ground from every power outlet is really connected to that one and only minus pole/ground in the battery chain, but the bad side of this set-up is that you drain this first battery much faster than the other, which you can overcome by putting a bigger capacity battery there. However, you have still an unbalanced system and when shooting with 24 volt camera's like the 435 you have more stress on the lower rated battery, so say the start-up is 10-14 amps, you draw this through the smaller cells of the smaller battery too, while the bigger block probably would not be harmed by that. I hope this is clear enough. Oh, almost forgot: with a multi battery setup AND a switch for 12/24 volts, you HAVE to use high power diodes to protect the batteries from charging/discharching each other! Brett Manyluk
Try giving David Hable a call. It's much easier to reach him that way. 604.254.8619
