Isaac J. E. Garcia
Hello folks, I am going to be flying a Sony Venice for a project coming up and I was wondering if anyone has ever flown that camera and if there is anything I should be aware of? As far as I know it will be with cinema glass, mb, ff, and that's about it. I will be using a Zephyr, any concerns about the payload? Thanks in advance. Premium Members brett.mayfield Posted July 18, 2019 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 18, 2019 hey dude dunno if youve already done this job or not. nonetheless, ive been shooting on the venice for 18 months now. payload of the zephyr is twenty pounds rite? im sure its possible but unlikely to get that camera under weight, then consider batteries. to trim weight, try flying it with an anton bauer to 4pin xlr plate that you can power off your sled. if youve got an arm that will handle it then go for it. i do think that its will likely pickup vibrations pretty easily, so you may need to be especially considerate of your gait and speed. its not a tricky camera. japanese manufacturer so the menu is such, a little deep. get a clean feed to your monitor, i believe it can be set to sdi 2. you dont want to deal with the camera info clutter. this will kill your surround view, but i think that its worth it. i like the inertia of a good build on this body. have fun! brett. Hey Brett, Zephyr has a payload of 23. I have been adding up the weight and it seems like it should all be okay? Venice is rated at 8 lbs, 10 oz. Cooke s4 is 3.5 lbs, IDX V Mount is 2.2lbs and I believe it's a light mattebox (Tangerine or similar 7.2oz.) FF should be minimal, Teradek is under a pound, the build overall is stripped down. I can't think of anything else that would really send it over. Does that seem good to you, am I missing something that will make it too heavy? Thanks for your input! Premium Members brett.mayfield Posted July 18, 2019 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 18, 2019 usually the camera has arri plates, some kind of cage, top handle, etc. but perhaps you can get it all down to nothing. but you'll need to attach your follow focus and wireless to something... You are definitely right about that! Thanks. I knew there was something slipping my mind. I need to figure out the plate weight and cage, I will try and lose the top handle as well. Seems like it will be pushing 20lbs.
Premium Members brett.mayfield Posted July 18, 2019 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 18, 2019 it's not awesome to fly a rig heavier than the payload of your arm or rig but it's doable. just puts pressure on your arm to lift the rig a bit and also puts pressure on your hardware. bring a bathroom scale but don't freak out if your over 23. it may be that your warranty isn't covered on heavier payloads but I truly don't know about that aspect
Premium Members Aaron King Posted July 19, 2019 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 19, 2019 I'm about to my second show with a Venice, and a third coming up in the fall. Besides what Brett has told you about the weight, be aware that it is power hungry, and I believe only draws 3 amps (what I've heard from utility & AC chatter) which doesn't help when powering other accessories from the camera. Most of my experience is with the added recorder deck on the back for 4K which pulls even more juice. I feel that if you are just using the built in recorder, you will be in a better position for power draw. If you can request some extra batteries for the shoot, I would do it. Knowing I have a large cache of batteries on heavy steadi days gives me extra piece of mind. Test it out at a prep so you know your limits before you start shooting.
