Premium Members Lars Erik Posted April 13, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 13, 2006 Just saw a Formula 1 race. The drivers all have a video camera attached in the car. The signal was amazing. I realize they have about 50 billion budgets on F1, but anyone know what kind of system they use to send wireless images? Premium Members Jason Torbitt Posted April 13, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 13, 2006 I think the system they use is from Gigawave, or someone similar. (Gigawave also produce the wireless protable cameras which are often used on Steadicam) The concept is that the signal from the onboard minicam is uplinked to the helicopter (which also has a gyrostabilised camera mount for beauty shots and aerial tracking), fed down to the scanner truck in the OB village, and then obviously the live programme is output via satellite to millons of people arond the world. As far as I'm aware the signal from the car to helicopter is now digital, so the signal received and 'put out' will either be constant or a freeze frame, as opposed to a few years ago where there was much signal noise and interfereance on the analogue transmission. Anthony Graham
Hi Just a minor correction here. They no longer use a helicopter for uplink, They use multiple recievers round the track now. As the old Analogue system had line of sight issues going under bridges etc, which would cause havok on a digital system. At least that is what I was told be a Techie for the F1 TV crew.
