Connector types for Clipper II and Arri SR-3

Hi,

 

First off I'll just say I probably should have bought a 24V rig.....DAMN IT.

 

 

Alright, I ordered the 14-26Volt converter from Marell electronics and they say it comes standard with XLR cables for input and output of the power.

 

I would like to get the proper cable from them to just plug into my sled and not have to adapt to XLR then back to Lemo.

 

The Clipper 2 that I have has the small 3pin Lemo(I think) on the top stage, to power cameras, it also has a larger 3pin Lemo??(not sure) on the side of the electronics down by the battery (like an ultra). So my first question is will both of these power points put out the same current(Amps) or is the top stage power jack limited to a certain amperage (at 12Volts) because of the cables that run through the post.

 

My second question, is the power point on the back of the top stage in fact a size 0 Lemo? (I know its three pin) So I would have to order a size 0 three pin male connector cable from Marell, to power up the new voltage converter.

 

But if I powered up the converter from the power point on the side of the electronics down below it would have to be a size ????? 3pin Lemo connector (like the ones on an ultra).

 

And finally, all this work is so I can power an Arri SR-3 camera which correct me if I'm wrong is a 2pin Fisher connector.

Chris,

 

Ideally you want to mount the converter at the bottom of the sled and send 24V up the post. THIS MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE with a Clipper, but it very well could be depending on the way they wired it. Usually, a three pin power connector is used on the sled for the camera because one pin is ground, one 12V, the third 24V. This provides protection if you accidentally flip your rig to 24V with a 12V camera as nothing will happen (providing you are using the proper power cable) because the 24V pin will not be wired on your 12V cables. At least this is the way the PRO (& I believe the Master works). To do this, there are separate power lines running up the post. Obviously, you do not want to convert all lines to 24V else you fry your monitor, etc. So, you need to find out from Tiffen how the post is wired.

The most obvious answer to me would be to fly the SR3 with its on board 24 volt battery. I find that often depending on the setup with the SR3 I like having the extra weight of the battery on there.

 

The thing you will have to check up on is power for the video split. I know some of the rental companies have cables to power the split from the camera, but depending on the rental company, and the power outlets this can be an issue with remote focus, as the remote run can be the same plug as the accessory power. (I know this is the case on the SR2's but cant remember the SR3's). Most common splits we get here tend to be 12 volts.

 

Speek to the rental company and the 1st AC and find out about the camera setup and you will be able to make it work for you. Its better spending the extra time in pre to save yourself hassles on set.

I'm planning to do a 24v mod to my Clipper II sled as well.

The post indeed has three power wires and the 24 volt 3'rd pin is connected in both the top and the bottom power plugs.

My current plan is to mount a second Anton Bauer plate at either at the back of the existing plate or on the accessory dovetail plate at the bottom. Then I can serial mount the extra battery to the bottom powerplug. over the Gyro plug.

Well thats my plan....I still need to do a little more research on the schematics of the power circuits in the sled though, don't want to fry anything...

Well looks like we are about to do the same thing, almost. I plan on using a Marell Electronics MPC14-26 DC to DC converter to give me 24V where I need it. I am not done thinking of the best place to mount it and feed the 24V into the sled. I might create a totally separate connection or use the Gyro plug on the side of the electronics.

 

Well anyhow I will definitely be talking to Kyle and Rob at Tiffen just to check, but it doesn't seem to be a very complicated mod.

 

p.s. I had Rob at Tiffen email me the .pdf electrical schematic of the clipper II so if you want to take a look shoot me an email or give Rob a call.

You are correct. The SR-3, 535, 535B, 435, 235, ARRICAM ST, ARRICAM LT, and 416 all use a 2pin Fischer connector with pins on the body side. So the connector on the cable is "female." The part number for the cable connector is: S 105 Z087-130 + or SI 405 Z087 C3J2R (or something close to that, I have to look it up) if you want it with the lightweight teflon case. There is an additional part number needed for the collet which varies with type and size. As with most ARRI stuff pin #1 is the ground and pin #2 is positive.
