F-900 / PRO-35 adaptor

Hi,

 

I've had a call about a possible job coming up soon, which would be quite major for me or whoever ends up doing it - I've done a forum search, and got some clues there, but I'm just looking for any other tips you guys may have for this setup on the rig:

 

Shot on HD, with the F-900, P&S Techniks Pro-35 adaptor, primes - any quirks with the F900 or anything I should be worried about? In particular, I've not worked with the Pro35 before, so any clues would be good. I know my way round all the big camera bodies, no problems with that, I know its power hungry, no problems there, 6 AB bricks for the rig, and obviously I'm aware as per usual things will be very front heavy up top. Maybe using a Fox to pull focus, or a Genio if they decide they want a zoom lens.

Hi Jason,

 

There is two major things to look after on the Pro 35. First, every time you power down the Pro 35 (change of batteries) it has to be re-powered on (the power switch is intermittent, it has to be pressed again when power is back) This alone is a major thing to look after since you still have an image in the OFF position. also remind your assistants to look after this.

 

Also, the On-Off of the Sony camera for your remote focus goes thru the lens connector, the same that powers the Pro 35 ... So you won't be able to use your On-off cable to start the camera from the remote. Put a BIG tape on the on-off off the remote to remind your focus puller to start the camera "manually" and not from the remote.

i am sure someone here probably had different cables made to power the Pro 35 from another connector to be able to use their On-Off cable. If I had a couple of days to shoot with this setup, I would probably go for that solution.

 

and finally , I strongly recommend a Tally light ( I got mine mainly for HD jobs) since I operate with the viewfinder off to take some weight off, the only light remaining is at the rear of the camera, not enough for me to be confortable knowing the camera is rolling or not.

Just received and tested mine. NICE! Simple design, compact, runs on a 9 volt ...and wireless. item was delivered on time as promised, no hassle .

 

Here is the reason I bought one:

 

I was flying a Sony 900 with Pro-35 adapter. The Pro-35 was taking it's power from the Sony camera, directly from the lens connector (the one we use to On/Off the camera with our remote focus systems). As you guessed, the on/off cable was not used because of this configuration and we forgot about it; there is one shot that was NEVER recorded because we used the On/off from the remote instead off starting the camera manually...

 

That thing would have saved me a call from the producer nobody wants to answer.

Yes, the adapter powers through the port that you use for remote start on Sony cameras, but no worries as the adapter has a remote on/off port of its own! Its a three pin Lemo, same as Arri 24V remote (435, SR3, 535B, etc). Use this cable with the Mom/Con switch set to Mom (just like on the 24V Arris).

 

I wouldn't really worry about remotes for a zoom because you should be using primes on the Steadicam with this system.

I did call in at the rental house to know about this extra connector, with no results. I should have asked here first I guess. This is a relief to know I can actually use my 24vArri start stop cable next time.

I am incidently shooting on this setup tomorrow with a sony970. Great advice! thankyou.... Its great about the re turning the spinner on because I power down my rig all the time and thus the camera and so the the PStechniks... maybe Ill avoid that tomorrow.

 

Planning on running everything including modulus/bartech/camera/transvideo monitor/pstechniks off their one lithium battery

 

I am not expecting it to be that much heavier on top though.. i think it will be fine. Avoid putting a battery on the camera.

 

Double check you have some nice newer lenses that are not too stiff for your genio/fox motor.

Hey Jason, just a few little things you might already know: You may need to change the "battery type" in the menus. Sometimes it is necessary to fool the camera when running power from a cable. This camera will send a warning and sometimes shut down even if you have battery power left. Try changing the battery type setting, if this happens. Also, the obvious, get your self an "ICON" down converter, if you don?t have a component HD monitor. Be sure you have the proper power cables for it.

 

Good luck, fun camera, but gets a bit heavy with all the stuff on it.
