Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted April 29, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 29, 2006 Moderators: Since this forum seems to be heading in the right direction, I wonder if now is the time to make policy that everyone use their real names as opposed to user names? Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted April 30, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 30, 2006 Second that motion... Real names, Real people, Real locations... If you can't or want, DO you have something to hide? 2 usernames come to mind: CYBERKOOK@aol.com and STHINKPAD@aol.com... remember June 1995... That can spoil someones day, week, month... you get the point. I'm making it my policy not to answer post that are not at least signed properly. But it's completely up to Tim Tyler. Tim? Sincerely, Erwin "will not tell you my nickname" Landau
Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted April 30, 2006 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted April 30, 2006 Another idea. How about membership approval for new members to avoid multiple accounts? Remember the infamous poll and ballot stuffing? how many accounts did he have 10, 12?? Membership approval is kinda sticky, but Moderator approval would be easier to implement

Premium Members Marc Abernathy Posted April 30, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 30, 2006 there is a plugin for VBullitien sites that will show the mods and admins if someone signs up using the same computer/cookie. this would totally let the powers that be on this site know when someone signs up form the same person. we use this on a site im a admin for and it has come in real handy on visitors that we have banned in the past... but i really would like this site to be limited to people already working and or have atleast have taken a workshop. since there are now other forums for smaller rigs and such, i think this site should get its status back as THE #1 place for working operators.... Eric, erwin/ other mods, you guys are really showing a presence here and its definately making a POSITIVE impact on the site. i know you guys have busy days more so than others here and i applaud you on taking the step to keeping this site under control. ooh, and i want to send a shout out to all my friends and hi mom.. (couldnt resist!)
Premium Members Jason Williams Posted April 30, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 30, 2006 At the end of the day you can't strictly control IP's - dial up modems generally change every time, and even with Cable Internet, unplug your modem for 30 minutes and you have a new IP ... it's very hard to lock down - I don't know much about the AdminCP of IPB but it's very similar to VBulletin - you should be able to restrict by email address, so only one is alloweable, but not sure if it's possible to allow only one IP - maybe the Moderators could keep a check on that situation, it's likely you can check for usernames with the same IP -- but I'm not too sure on that. The only real way to automatically check for multiple accounts with one IP would be to hardcode something into the PHP files. Sorry if that sounded arsey, just trying to help! Jason Edit ... in hindsight gone off track here a bit, sorry!
Guest Guest
you can also stop Ips at the gateway but that would probably blacklist some legitimate users as well. you can specify certain domains/IPs, etc... all with certain plugins. but if someone is determined to get thru they will. these options will stop the casual person but a serious hacker could wreak havoc if they got pissed. i dont expect anyone to come in and overturn the site nor do i really expect anyone to keep trying to use multiple usernames.. i was only mentioning certain tactics this site could use if it ever came to that... Premium Members Marc Abernathy Posted May 1, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 1, 2006 oops that was me above. i posted this on a non cookied computer. whicih leads me to another suggestion that "guests" should not be allowed to post. Premium Members Jason Williams Posted May 1, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 1, 2006 That's possibly one flaw - allowing non-registered members to be able to post - I don't know whether that was intended, but imagine what it's possible to do without even signing up to the forum! Mikael Kern
I think that if all posts are signed with real names (are from logged in members of this forum) then we´re OK. Let us not worry before there is a real problem. Mikael "If it aint broke don´t fix it" Kern
Tim Tyler
Guests can only post in the Support Forum. That is allowed so new users can ask for help if they cannot log in. There is no sure way to lock out a problematic user who wants to cause trouble. I can block IP's, IP range's, domains, and some other stuff, but that's really not an absolute way to keep certain people out. Moderator approved registrations is one way. Charging people is another. Both of those methods will dissuade legit people from joining the forum though. I think it may be best to keep an eye out for the troublemakers and deal with the problems when they appear.
