Preston Motor Overheating

I was shooting today with the Elaine and the Super 16 short Zoom. Very easy to focus, not sticky at all.

I used my Preston DM-2 for Focus at the most powerful setting. Everything was fine, the motor performed flawlessly, until 3 shoots before wrap... It started to only pull the lens over a section of the barrel and with each pull it got less. The motor was extremely hot to touch. I immidiately pulled the motor off and replaced it with a DM-1, I only have one DM-2.

It's not like the lens was sticky and the motor had problems to pull it, it just started to have trouble... I didn't had the chance to put up the motor again to check... I will do so tomorrow.

I will also give Howard a call tomorrow.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Erwin

that's the first I've heard of a preston motor over-heating, but I know the smaller motor is about half the strength of the bigger ones -- maybe it was working harder than you think (it was at the highest setting)? I was thinking of picking one up someday.

Erwin, sorry I forgot to call back with the top-secret info you requested...what did you find?

hey Erwin,

it sounds like the motor got bumped/droped/hit etc... the internal axle and worm gear and housed by 2-3 bearings on either end, and is VERY precise in alignment..think gimble tolerance. Also, if the main drive gear is what is out, it is amplified by the reversed gearing ratio to the motor, thus overheating.

Send 'er in, but maybe this helps some...

Thanks guys,

Dan thinks that it hit a physical stop and stalled. As it was on high power it kept going until it burned it self out. But it was still focusing, just with a bunch of noise... As it's grinding as well, it could have been dropped... but I trust my AC's when they said it was not. As well as it was never of the rig during the day...

Transpo dropped it of at Preston, will be a week until they can have a look. Estimated damage as per phone call $500.- plus. Luckily I have a bunch of DM-1's... heavy suckers.

Oh, well...

Ron: The code word is (b e e r) I think...

Focus Safe,
