Mikael Kern
Thanks for sharing.Hows the new rig working out Mikko ? Man that g50 sure goes high :D Also, can we please do a little less quoting around here? Simply reply to the posts rather than quote the entire thing! Thank you. I find it confusing that when I hit the Reply-button, I reply with quoting. If I want to reply WHITOUT qouting, I have to hit the Quote-button first and then the Reply-button. Also my choise is forgotten and I have to do it again next time. Why not turn the quoting off as default? Or better: Change the 2 buttons to: Button # 1: "Reply" (without quoting) Button # 2: "Reply with quoting" Mikael Kern
Premium Members Brad Grimmett Posted May 4, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 4, 2006 Mikael, The reason is because you're using the wrong reply button. You're replying to a specific message instead of to the whole thread. All the way down at the bottom right of all the messages there is a reply button that you should use. Even if you hit the wrong one all you have to do is delete what is already written.

Maybe the buttons should change - not me. :-) Mikael Kern
Premium Members Brad Grimmett Posted May 4, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 4, 2006 Um, OK. My apologies for trying to be helpful. Hopefully you can convince the "machines" to do EXACTLY what you want all the time, even if you do it wrong.
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted May 4, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 4, 2006 Oy. Mikael, what exactly does it mean to want to reply to a specific message without quoting? That should return an empty reply box, right? That's what the reply button at the very bottom does. Perhaps you are saying that wherever you are in the thread, you want to be able to hit the closest reply button to compose your email? If that is the case, it's sort of unusual--generally one reads to the bottom of a thread (in case there are more responses or information that might be relevant), so the global reply button is usually quite accessible. As for me, I wish that there was capability to highlight text, hit "quote" and then have the reply box pop up with only the highlighted text quoted. I'm pretty sure I've done this in other boards. Brad, very funny--and I think you've also managed to define an approach to Steadicam that I've seen a few times from workshop participants...! Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted May 5, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 5, 2006 I think you guys need to read this book. "How to Survive a Robot Uprising" it's halarious. Daniel H. Wilson: I went and asked a lot of robotics researchers (roboticists) how they would escape from their robots. The number one reply was, "I would walk away slowly." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...5111700918.html

I may have had some experience with this in the past.....hopefully Alec and Garrett will keep quiet on the issue.
Premium Members Afton Grant Posted May 5, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 5, 2006 Tim.... Charles and Brad too... I too like the idea of quoting just the selection. I'm not sure how much control you (Tim) have over the actual code that runs the forums. I know you're a web development guy, so I'm guessing you've got the ability to modify it. The JavaScript method document.selection (PC/IE) and window.getSelection() (Firefox & Safari) is what you'd probably be looking for in this case. If you think it's a function you want to add, get in touch if you need or want any help. It'd be the least I can do for the free use of such a great resource. Regarding the regular Reply/Quote buttons, I think it's all pretty self-explanatory. As long as the user is not impulsive and takes the time (2-3 seconds) to think about the clicks he/she makes, all should be well. Best, Afton
