what rigs to use with HDV ?

hello everybody !

I have a job on HDV coming up witrh the new Panasonic DVCPRO50 HDV. It´s about 2,5 kg heavy and my rig

(a Baerbel) is too big for this. The production wants to buy a Mini-Steadicam for it and asked me what to choose.

I have absolutely no idea about small steadicam systems! what is out there ? Glidecam?Hollywood?Steadicam-Junior ?

What systems are on the market, wich is the best or comes closest to a normal Steadicam ? How much do they cost?..............

 

It would be really great if you could give me some answers!!!

the steadicam flyer will be the good one for what you need .

it's near 7000 ? and you use it as the big ones .

Stay away from the SE (Special Edition) no reason to over pay for the same product.

 

 

The nicest body mounted rig for that weight and for the money. It's about $7000.-

Never used a Baerbal. But I own a Steadicam Archer, and used a Vector and Master a lot also.

 

Have shot a documentary series all on Steadicam with the Sony HDV. And this I found out was too light for the rigs. Whatever I did, it was always too bottom heavy. So I bought a 2kg weight from a sailing store. The weights they had had a perfect fit to be on that camera. I attached with strong velctro (3M dual lock), and secured it with a bit of tesa tape. Now it workes like a charm. Got any drop time I needed, and easy to get in DB.

Spend a 300-400 Euros/Dollars on a weight cage kit. It allows you to use your rig, and can be used with a variety of cameras, you can then tune it's weight to your preferred set-up, save a bundle and look good to production.

 

I have one made by Rob Van Gelder, and Mike O'Shea makes one, DV/ Practice Cage thread

hey imran ! that´s what i asked them too! I could just use my rig with my weight-plates..........but for them owning a little rig is cheaper,than paying for the big one! allways moneyreasons...!but i`m still looking forward to this badly paid job.....never worked with a small steadicam before and i can imagine it to be fun.

FYI, Panasonic doesn't make HDV cameras--I'm assuming you mean the HVX200 which records in both DVCPRO50 and HD (720p, sometimes called DVCPRO100).

 

I also agree the Flyer is the best choice but you might want to point out to them that if they have any thoughts of using a Mini35 or a Movietube and PL lenses with same, they will need to go to a bigger rig as that will load the system beyond the Flyer's 15 lb capacity.

I don´t know exactly what camera they use,but you are probably right that it is the HVX200.It´s a P2 system and also records on MiniDV.No Mini35,so the flyer will be okay.

Another question about the Flyer: can you adjust dynamic balance as you can on big rigs?

P2 and MiniDV - yup, that's the HVX-200. DVCPRO-HD, not HDV in that cam :)

It will work well on the Flyer, it's maybe a *little* light (for my taste), so a bit of something extra up top might be nice.

 

Yes you can put the Flyer in D.Bal, but it's a little harder as it's swing adjustments, not sliding rods, but it does work.
