If I have to go to baggage claim anyway, the last thing I want to do is shlep a case around an airport. I've been traveling with gear for 25 years and only once had damage. Broken mirror in video camera viewfinder. Actually watched the case fall out of the baggage cart as the ramp rat sped around. Even so, I never hesitate to check gear and free up my arms for more important things like beer.
