Feels kind of weird. I?ve been cameragod on the net for over 10 years now. I guess I had outgrown it but more people know me as CG than this Press guy. I was even getting speaking invitations addressed to Mr. Cameragod? well ok only one speaking invitation. :)

This guideline, which is appropriate and well-intentioned, is also non-standard in the bulletin board world at large and thus needs to be made very clear to new members. Chastising them for not having found this out as in this thread is obviously not a good way to make an impression, as several of the memers pointed out there.

I tried logging out and going through the process to start an account here, and there is nothing in the forum guidelines or elsewhere about using one's real name as a screenname (the obvious place for a note on this would be right at the screen that one inputs this info).

Similar to Charles's suggestion of taking care of the issue right from the start, I wonder if it would be possible to get rid of the display names completely. Simply ask the user's first name and last name in the signup process. The display name would be created automatically. Since full names are now a "requirement", one shouldn't have the opportunity to do anything else.

Might hinder a spammer or two too?
