Premium Members Charles Papert Posted May 31, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 31, 2006 Sounds like a hell of a shoot Bill! re: crane diving--if you are up to it, I think many of us would like to hear an update from you; how you are doing most importantly, but also details about the incident. Certainly there are important lessons to learn from this for beginners and masters alike. Please start a new dedicated thread, if this is the case. all the best (genuinely) Chas

Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted May 31, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 31, 2006 I remember that there was a "one take" music video from Janet Jackson, starting with a craneshot , but cannot recall the title of the song. Early 1990 I think. i was impressed with it, that time. Anyone has found this video?

TJ Williams
The Operator was Randy Nolan. there are several step on step offs from a crane or lift, up and down stairs big dance number etc etc...  film runout is covered once by a news guy flashing the camera... once I think behind a post etc. This is a really wonderful piece of operating. Wish I could remember the title?? Oh well the memory is the second thing to go... TJ
Premium Members Jon Myers Posted June 2, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 2, 2006 It's not a music video but a live performance. Dave Eastwood shot Marc Anthony at Madison Square Gardens a few years ago for a HBO special. He started at the back up by the roof and they flew him down to the stage and he stepped off and shot the whole song by himself. The director had all the other cameras shooting Dave while he did this. I wish that I could see that video. Then at the end of the song they flew him back up and out again. I saw it once and it was pretty awesome considering it was at a live event and he couldn't go back to one if he screwed up. Premium Members Charles Papert Posted June 2, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 2, 2006 The Janet Jackson video is "When I Think of You". It's on the MTV site but I can't get the media to play for me from there, hope you guys have better luck. I was thinking about a video I haven't seen in the 20 years intervening, Tommy Shaw (from Styx)'s "Girls with Guns" video. All I remembered was that it was black and white, a single Steadicam shot of the band playing. I found it on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16OL3nbbDYE&search=shaw) along with an interview where Tommy describes how they made a high-concept video for the song that he didn't like, so they let him make a second version that was more performance based. It's amazing how time changes things--I remember how impressed I was with this video the few times I saw it, but after all that has come and gone since, it's pretty basic looking today and of course our operating standards have changed. I think there was a kind of cool opening to the video, entering the studio, but they don't have it here. So sort of interesting as a period piece. Did anyone here operate it or know who did?? Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted June 6, 2006 Moderators Report Share Posted June 6, 2006 Made this guy's post invisible, but I don't have the ability to put him on moderator approval. For whatever reason, it seems that Eric, Erwin and I are all missing some functions (i.e. Erwin can't merge posts). I'm sure this is an oversight by Tim, but its kinda funny - we each have our own super powers!

I think you can find the entire show here (it's from the DVD): http://www.youtube.com/results?search=%22M...e=search_videos Do you remember the name of the song? P.S.: Concerning the Janet Jackson clip - that one gave me a good flashback. I remember I was very impressed by the Steadicam on that one (can't say the same about the song itself, though :P )
