Steadicam Flyer workshop (Melbourne, Australia)

This is a courtesy reminder to let you all know that bookings are now open for Phil Balston?s up and coming ?Lightweight Steadicam Operators Workshop? for the Steadicam Flyer on October 14-15 (Sat-Sun) in Richmond (VIC), Australia. Cost: $799 for two days.

 

WORKSHOP OUTLINE

 

Day One

- Steadicam components, theory of how it works.

- Build and balancing the rig.

- Basic straight line ?flying?.

- Footwork and hand techniques.

- Framing and composition.

- Techniques for complex shots.

 

Evening Session

- Video clips, discuss techniques used.

- Working on the set, communicating with director and crew.

- Freelancing.

 

Day Two

- Rebuild rigs, review day one

- Low mode, ride on and hard mounting techniques.

- Safety considerations.

- Grand Prix shot performed by each student.

- Wrap up.

 

There will be one Steadicam Flyer? and instructor for each group of 3 - 4 students with a maximum of 12 students for each workshop. Full catering is provided as well as a professionally prepared and printed course notes manual.

I hope you guys touch on the pro user potential for the flyer with the Arri 235 and 416 cameras, the Flyer could easily be used on major features with the right accessories. This is a very exciting time the light steadicams!

Hi Bob,

We certainly do bring up the potential for high end film use in the workshop. Currently I'm only aware of one Arri 235 in Australia though and last time I spoke to guys that own it it wasn't available to try out. We discuss the use of wireless focus / iris and transmitting video split etc.

 

Also with a 2 day only workshop it's necessary to keep things on track. 75% of the workshop is practical and we rapidly progress to single shot scene type exercises. Whether it's an HDV camera, an Aaton A-Minima or an Arri 235 the exercises are basically the same

 

I feel as long as the students know the Flyer is capable of carrying 35mm film cameras and it's potential as lightweight "running rig" we have given them the necessary information.

 

Since the last workshop Arri have established their own office in Australia, I'll talk to them and see if we can get a 235 just show what can be done.
