Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted March 12, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 12, 2004 I wonder how this will operate, with so much weight on top. It looks to me that this configuration needs a lot of redesigning before it might be called "steadicam friendly" There must be a way to put the batteries at least besides the camera and the Cineram in line with the body. As it is right now, it looks like a camera in a low-mode cage, shooting in high-mode. Rob van Gelder, Bangkok, Thailand
Mitch Gross
I should think an L-plate could be fashioned easily enough, with just some short jumpers. Of course someone has to do it... It is one of the few video cameras that isn't freakin' 10 feet long, especially rare in HD.
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted March 12, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 12, 2004 Relax guys... That was the prototype Harddrive that they put inside a IDX charger, they had it just finished in time for NAB 2003. But keeping in mind that the Camera weights 6 LBS. the lens about 3 and the Harddrive including 2 Batteries was 4lbs... Still makes for a freakishly light set up... I heard months ago, that they had a proper dock ready that mounts in the classic fasion onto the back and is limited to 4.5 minutes... I'm sure you will be seeing it at this years NAB... BTW: Who is going to Vegas this year... anybody up for car pool?
Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted March 12, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 12, 2004 I heard months ago, that they had a proper dock ready that mounts in the classic fasion onto the back and is limited to 4.5 minutes... 4,5 minutes........ ok, it is the same as a 400 ft load of 35, but it´s clear that the data storage has some more time to go...... Look on the bright side: you cannot schlepp this thing around (although it´s light) for 55 minutes as you can with regular HD cinealta. That gives us some time to breath between takes! Mitch Gross
I understand that he's looking to get it up to 10 minutes by the end of the year.
Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted March 12, 2004 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 12, 2004 I think 4.5 minutes is plenty! :) I can't wait to put this on my rig!!! Lets hope it has some sort of internal down convertor!!! (Wishful thinking)

Are you using solid state on camera recording, or going tethered ? Cheers -matt
Premium Members Erik Brul Posted March 8, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 8, 2006 Hi Geoff, I have flown the Viper in 2005 on mine Rig. It wasn't easy task because they had connected me with two coax cables to transfer the HD signal to the OBV. In the Netherlands the Grass Valley harddisk or Grass Valley? Venom FlashPak was not present at that moment.. It should be a nice package, specially designed for example Steadicam use. The bad thing is.., it can only hold about 10 minutes HD filmstream. So, shooting on a Rig with the Viper, use above mentioned FlashPak B) Best, Erik check below link for FlashPak : http://www.thomsongrassvalley.com/products/cameras/venom/
Premium Members geoff shotz Posted March 9, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 9, 2006 matt- looks like they are gonna want the tether, much to my chagrin. but, they are promising a really thin cable to run from my vest tothe camera. we'll see. anyways, for ten minutes of record time, those venom backs sound a little much. oh, and did i mention that the job is shooting in 2.40:1. what fun. thanks to both of you for the info. i'll read it tonight and see how much i can learn without actually having the camera in hand. Premium Members Dave Chameides Posted May 2, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 2, 2006 Anyone flown this thing? Wondering how bad it is on batts? Same problem as the genesis? Thoughts? dave
Premium Members Eric Fletcher S.O.C. Posted May 2, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 2, 2006 Anyone flown this thing? Wondering how bad it is on batts? Same problem as the genesis? Thoughts? dave It's a 5-9 amp camera. use the big Dionic and you will be fine. The worst part of it though is the SDI line (or Dual SDI) coming off the camera, I use a super flexible bnc jumper to the HDSDI BNC that is strain relieved on my suit. The biggest thing that is strange about the camera is that it balance's strange since there is almost no tail weight.
Premium Members geoff shotz Posted May 2, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 2, 2006 just finished a full feature with the viper yesterday. i'll post a full review when i feel a little less sleep deprived. if you need some immediate feedback, contact me off forum. where will you be renting the camera from? which rig are you flying? geoff
Premium Members Dave Chameides Posted May 4, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 4, 2006 If I do it (and that's a big if) I'll be using my old arse PRO with original battery system (yes, they are still out there). So I'm assuming this thing will nail my batts as bad as the genesis will yes? May have to strike another camera off my list. Dave
