As Ron said just take a workshop before you do anything. Learning to operate Steadicam is not likely to happen by watching videos of people flying rigs, it is a complicated technique and it takes lots of practice, love, SWEET and MONEY (please note the capitals on the last 2 words).

Just going to a workshop is going to cost you around 3000 US. I don?t want to discourage you but there are enough histories about people not taking Steadicam seriously and ending in a one way alley after loosing a decent amount f money.

Regarding the body composition of the Steadicam operator you couldn't be farther away from the truth. The idea of the muscle pack, 6'5'' Steadicam operator is just an urban legend. You don?t need to be tall of very strong to fly a rig; what you will need is good knees, good physical condition and specially GOOD OPERATRING TECHNIQUE that you will only obtain from other operators.

Hi Nelson, please re-read the advice above and keep in mind that you want to do a camera technique that is probably the most expensive of all, for one person.

So 300 Euro for a workshop is nothing, really, in "94 I had a workshop in America, and it cost me converted in Euro's around 3.000, the dollar was much higher then. This was my beginners course. In 2002 i had another workshop in Sweden, it cost me about 3,500 euro again. And i saved because i brought my own rig!

when you say you have 5000 euro, please know that a good working, but one of the cheapest follow-focus unit is around 4000 Euro, to start with!

So when you want a full sytem Steadicam please understand: you get what you pay for!

Make sure in what market you want to work, video, movies, industrials, or else. The demand in each can be very different and so will be the budgets. And therefore your fee!

These things with Steadicam are true: you cannot hurry this, it takes time, preparation, lots of money, a good, fit body, dedication and preferably a reasonable time spend as a normal cameraman.

:)
