HELP, Sled Malfunctioning

HELP,

 

I have a EFP sled with MMX conversion.

When I place a battery on the sled and press the main power button to enable all the electronic components to receive power from the sled the button keeps popping back up.

But when there is no battery connected to the sled the main power button stays down as it normally should do.

I used several different batteries and I get the same results each time which leads me to believe that it is the sleds electronics or possibly a breaker?

 

Can anyone help me or give me some advice?

Hi Tom:

 

Check if your cables and accesories are ok.

Maybe you have a short-circuit.

If you need change the Breaker, I bought some of them for my EFP some month ago.

 

The code is:

I think the button you are referring to is the breaker. It seems to not happy with something inside so I'd definately open up the upper/lower j-box's and sniff around.

Well, I'm not certain what a "MMX" conversion is but you have a short circuit somewhere. My guess is if the conversion included a new centerpost cable or upper j-box that it was incorrectly wired.

FIRST-

 

to trace- take off every cable that you can.

 

try it,

 

if it does not pop put cables back on one at a time and see when it pops...

when it does pop the last cable that you put on is the culprit. replace it.

 

 

 

if it pops even when all cables are removed, you must take off more wires...

 

open up the base.

 

LOOK CLOSELY at the breaker itself and see if you can see the exposed switched side of the breaker touching anything. (also look to see if you can see any wires touching things that they should not be touching, ie worn insulation) if yes, insulate, if no , proceed.

 

 

CHOOSE A OR B

 

test your breaker by removing the wires from the switched side. does it pop without a load? replace...

if it does not pop, introduce a load such as a small 12v bulb and see if it pops. if yes, replace breaker, if no reattch original wires and goto B

 

 

 

B:

there are some multipin connections that your post wiring connects to the base with...

try taking those off and see if it pops.....

 

once you find the wire that is shorted the breaker will not pop if you put the battery on.

you can then trace the wire to see where it is rubbing the bare metal and repair.

First off are you sure that it's a bad breaker? I'm doubting that it is. Did it do this before the "MMX" Mod or after? what changed just before the breaker started to trip? In the end I wouldn't bypass the circuit breaker, it's doing it's job.

Maybe it will help if I give you some background.

When I bought this sled four yesrs ago it was already converted to handle both 12v and 24v as you can see from the pictures that it has a second AB gold mount for the 24v.

I have not had any problems till this weekend when the breaker will pop evert time I would put a battery in either of the AB gold mounts.

Anu suggestions or know of a somehere I can send it for repair?

I am located in the Pittsburgh Area.

............the result will be that you will melt wires in places that you do not want to melt them and you will have even more shorts than you already have.

 

................IF it is a BAD BREAKER, you could temporarily replace it with an inline fuse of the correct amperage until a new circuit breaker arrived.............(quick fix).......

 

but odds are that a wire is shorting out in the post (where movement occurs) or second choice is a hot wire has bounced around or melted thru insulation and is touching ground causing the breaker to pop....

 

THE FIRST thing that i would do looking at your photo is make sure the back of your switches that go 12/24 are not grounding out. if they have become loose from switching them you could have a problem there on the connections on the rear of the switches....(depending upon how they wired to get to 24v, a failed switch here could be causing the problem) also be careful not to let the back of the breaker touch anything.... or... is the AB mount on the bottom of the rig shorting out?

if i remember correctly, the mmx upgrade is done by brant fagen in new hampshire. he's on the board all the time. give him a call and see if he can repair the problem. good luck.

Geoff is correct. I built a couple of EFP MMX upgrades a few years back.

 

Tom and I have spoken and he has direction and is troubleshooting his sled with my direction.

 

I'm sure he has since found the problem and corrected it.

 

Let's all remember to NEVER bypass a breaker. Safety First. 12 on and 12 off.

 

Stop, Look, and Listen. Never mix drinks blindfolded.
