Just purchased a HVX200 now what steadicam

Hey Everyone, Merry Xmas

 

This is my first of many posts I hope.

Anyway, just a quick question, Ive seen so many post in relation to the best steadicam for the my job.

I produce Commercials for television in Australia, and just wondering which steadicam to purchase.

The prices are very high, so i have to choose carefully, Im running a HVX202en PAL version.

And can anyone point me in the right direction for my purchase, and maybe someone has a used one I could buy.

Who knows, the worlds a funny place.

I will be looking to produce a cooking show also.

The flyer (the little stabilizer I own) is tailor-made for something like the hvx. Used ones pop up on ebay every now and again for about 2/3 of the retail price. 98% of the stuff I do is either with the dvx or more recently, the hvx, both sometimes with ff and lens adapters. The equipment has held up and the scaled down rig is great to learn on. Definitely consider the flyer if you already own that particular camera.

Your questions are too broad... what to buy depends on too many things beyond the camera you bought.

 

You should first and foremost go to a 2 day "Flyer" workshop by Peter Abraham (click on the Steadicam logo at the top of the page).

 

In the workshop you will learn how to use a Steadicam well, have a solid foundation and understanding, and then you can make an informed choice on what to buy. It will be your best investment, saving you lots of time, angst, and cash.

He's new, being polite, even says Merry Xmas, and you threaten to delete his post if he doesn't use his real name. Is it really necessary to talk to him (and others) that way?

 

Most other forums on the internet don't care what you use as your name.

I think it's great that we want to know who people are here, but you have to realize that what you are asking isn't normal, and the way you are enforcing our policy makes all steadicam operators out to be arrogant 14yr old brats.

 

Be nice please, at least for the time when you are writing on this forum.

Before I got a bigger rig, I started with a Flyer and one of Peter's workshops (www.thesteadicamworkshops.com) just as Jerry already suggested; I recommend it highly. Peter is an excellent instructor and a great peson as well.

 

I flew the HVX200, Sony DSR-300a and Panasonic Varicam with my Flyer. With the later two cameras I removed the viewfinders, on-board mics and battery holders to save weight. As you'll soon see and if you look at some of the photos posted here, you'll ultimately end up adding remote focus, iris, transmitter and other accessories to the rig, plus cabling so if you're going to use larger cameras in the long run the Flyer may be at the top of it's range. Call Peter and take his workshop.

 

The Steadicam Operators Association also has a week-long workshop coming up in May and I can attest it's an invaluable experience or at least it was for me. Tiffen is holding a week-long workshop the end of March in California as well; Jerry Holway is the lead instructor for both I believe. It's money and time well spent.

On that note, are there stedicam courses in Australia you can reccommend, If so where?

As it is my Flyer Rig that has been offered to you, It could be seen a little biased for me to push it here, and I won't. (And yes, I am only selling it to buy another bigger rig)

 

One thing I will say though is even though you can compare rigs and pricing to that of those overseas, take into acount the local market, the cost of landing it, Customs, taxes, local support and the possibility that the rig is not as described - or worse.
