Martinez SOC Posted January 5, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 5, 2007 Hi Guy's I need to get a monitor for my rig and I'm having a hard time making up my mind about what to do. I'm looking at Tiffen Monitors they have a 7" LCD NTSC/PAL that is 700 NIT and a 7" HD that is 400 NIT I can get a down converter for the NTSC one that will make both monitor packages about the same price should I go for the brighter one? I'm having a hard time finding any other monitors that seem to be as bright and have that film on the front to cut glare. Premium Members JamieSilverstein Posted January 5, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 5, 2007 Philip; I don't know what Tiffen is charging for the monitor, but I can highly recommend the IMP Blackbird. It is very bright, great for outdoor work and is weighted very well. I have been using it for about 2 years now and I don't have any complaints, and the price isn't bad for a daylight viewable monitor with framelines. You should also look at the Transvideo high brightness monitors. They are very light in weight, but I have been told that their pciture is good outside, and you can compensate for the lack of heft by adding a battery back on to back of the monitor. Both of these monitors would need a down converter when shooting HD, which shouldn't present a problem. I am personally avoiding HD monitors for now. Just keep it in mind... It's supposed to get introduced this spring. So far Transvideo was the only LCD Monitor I ever considered spending money on (and actually did)... still prefer my Green screen... Premium Members Jeff Muhlstock SOC Posted January 5, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 5, 2007 Before you go and get an HD monitor, be sure you can cable it properly, HDSDI is a big problem down the post with most current rig wiring. Also, there seems to be a trend in some new HD cameras such as Sony?s 1500, they have a down converter built in. No need for a separate unit. As for Transvideo, I have been waiting for 10 years for this famous HD monitor. It seems to be right around the corner now for several years. I hope it?s finally close, I love my Transvideo. The Hummingbird is also an excellent choice, I have had them side by side and will admit it?s a slightly better picture then Transvideo (5% better, maybe). The 30 percent increase in price and weight lead me to the Cinemonitor 3. For now. The screen size is only about 1/2 an inch bigger diagonally (pretty marginal difference). Good luck with your choices; they are all pretty good ones. I looked at those monitors from the UK the balckbird the Tiffen one seems to be 1/2 the price. I have seen the TB-6 and loved it but that is out of my price range. The only reason I'm stuck with the HD thing is I have the Artemis EFP HDSDI rig with the 1.5 gz line for HDSDI and R G B HD lines in it (I feel like I should have an HD monitor, I'm loosing the Panasonic BT-LH900 that I have been flying with). I'm sending in my sled for the 24 volt upgrade with the hope to start doing film work so I do not need HD for a Video tap but brightness helps (700 nit vs., 400 nit) so I'm still up in the air. I have some tine to think still 'cause I'm on a non Steadicam job till the 19 and have nothing lined up right after so in the world of Good Fast Cheap I'm trying to go for good and Cheap (cheap for Steadicam $$) Thanks again Philip Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's not excessively bright outside but still easily viewable in direct sunlight. If you want you can see it or take it for a spin anytime, I work at Panavision NY and will bring it to work if you want to take a look. I had my first and hopefully last experience with the AJA yesterday on a Varicam shoot. It was intermittent right out of the box and then died completely. I'm looking at the ERG Ventures HDM-EV30D (HD) waiting for a price to see if I can afford it. It says it is daylight viewable, has anyone used one?
