Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted January 14, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 14, 2007 I have a G50 arm about three months old and it started to creak this weekend. With the help of my wife who was able to put her ears near the arm, it's coming from the bone / arm section closest to the gimbal as I boom downward and also a tiny bit when I boom up. The join section closest to the post. It sounds and resonates like the spring to me; sort of like an old screen door. It's not like a long continuous creak, more incremental if that makes any sense. Like whatever it is is "giving" in tiny steps as the spring or arm moves. I can feel whatever it is physically when I touch the spring and a little on the arm. It is definitely NOT subtle booming down and would ruin audio. I'm hesitant to focus on identifying it as the spring since I'm not very mechanical; that's just what it sounds like to my ears. Searching an earlier post for "creak" there were some references to CorrosionX, T-9 and others mostly related to corrosion on the G50 bolts. Would this be something I would spray or drip in tiny amounts in that general area on the arm? There's no corrosion on anything and the arm has not been subjected to any moisture or particularly dusty work. I do live in the desert though (Las Vegas) and our humidity is sometimes only 3-6% so it's not uncommon for things to dry up quickly. Thanks in advance! John Pappas
Hi Robert, I seem to recall a G50 arm making a similar noise at the last SOA workshop, and the solution was applying a lube to a trunion (i think). I would double check with Tiffen or maybe Jerry Holway. Peter Abraham was with me at the time, and he might remember more. Premium Members JamieSilverstein Posted January 15, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 15, 2007 At 3 months old, I would get in touch with Tiffen and find out what their solution is. The solution should be a long term one, and shouldn't really cost you anything by virtue of the fact that the arm is 3 months old!!! Not to sound too much like a consumer advocate, any time you spend several thousands of dollars on a product, the reliability of that product should be long lasting and the service should be willing and on going, as I am hopeful Tiffen's will be. The arm should provide you with great quiet operation for many years, and Tiffen should be proactive with their solutions. I look forward to hearing about what happens both with the arm and Tiffen's response to the problem. Jamie.
Premium Members Jerry Holway Posted January 15, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 15, 2007 Robert- Did you try a bit of lube (teflon spray works well and can't hurt) where the springs meet their holders (one at each end)? Premium Members Robert Starling SOC Posted January 16, 2007 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted January 16, 2007 I look forward to hearing about what happens both with the arm and Tiffen's response to the problem. Thank you Jamie, this thread seems to be closed now but to answer your question; in addition to the quick responses from Jerry and Garrett, the Senior Engineer at Tiffen had sent me an illustrated color cut-away diagram of the spring mounting assembly complete with arrows "drop of lube here" at 7:38 a.m. PST this morning. That's about as good as it gets in my book! I can't really think of ANY other product I own in my home or business where you would get such a high level response. Thanks again to everyone!

Premium Members James Elias Posted July 8, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 8, 2013 Charles, Robin most likely has that diagram because I remember seeing it - give him a call. If you're having problems he can certainly explain what you need to do and where. Regards, James
