I found while using a J-7 Zoom Control, some Canon HD lenses would slowly drift (zoom) in.

 

Is there a fix?

 

Does the ZOE or Stanton Zoom Control all handle HD lens with out a problem?

Hi Adam,

I can only speak for the Zoe III (www.bebob.de/international/zoe-III_eng.html). It has a little screw you can twist in case of lens drift. You just turn it until the zooming stops. I've used mine with plenty of Canon lenses and it performed great with all of them.

Adam, This is a long story, been down this road before. The bottom line, J-7 cant handle most of the newer style canon lenses. Zoe III handles it far better as does Stanton. The pot in the J-7 requires a larger "dead" zone then what canon has. The "dead zone" being the nuetral point between zooming in and zooming out, thus the "creep" occurs. Time to retire the J-7. I have tested just about every zoom control made, including Preston's, and I ended up with Zoe III. I have had the J-7 opened up by several techs, including canon folks, no luck, dont waist you time. unfortunately, I have yet to find a good solution for Film style lens, operator controlled zooming. I am still holding my breath for the "BUZ". This intermediate box should allow controllers like ZOE to work with M-1s or other analog motors. (Right Jim B...?) As for Preston, you would be stuck with there zoom control system which I didn?t like very much. I find the pressure sensitive thumb controllers are very difficult to feather when operating a rig. The more analog feel of a large toggle works better for me. Here is a picture of my Zoe III with the rubber microphone clip mod. Easy on and off and very comfy.

Ok, so now after reading Mr. Bartel's info on the BUZ, I see that a zoom motor is needed for "optimum" performance. So the next obvious question is, will M-One make a zoom motor for this application? What can we expect with standard focus motors? Jim Bartel, it?s your turn to chime in. This is a long awaited system.

Sorry. I've been working about 10 hours a day 6 days a week trying to keep up with BFD demand (152 ahipped last year, 12 already this month) so I haven't been in any great hurry to push the BUZ and add to my work load. But it is available and I will happily take your orders.

 

When using the BUZ with a non-zoom motor the motor is running open-loop, which means when you go below a certain mimimum speed it just stops. With a zoom motor the minimum speed is very slow, almosy imperceptible. So using the BUZ with a focus motor makes it similar to the rocker focus built into video cameras, useful for adjusting zoom but not for a long, slow zooms in shots.

 

I have discussed making a zoom with Don but the demand has been very small so far (only six sold last year), and with the large number of Heden M26T's around we didn't see a burning need. If the demand does increase we will very seriously look into making one.
