C-Motion

At last year´s IBC this system was introduced. I didn´t have the time and opportunity to check it out as it was always very busy at their booth.

It seems like the next step in remote lens and camera control, where all functions, including a display to see depth of field and lens position, are integrated and it will act as a substitute for the Arri FF system.

But Arri has gone in the same direction in design (see last years forum).

And it can work with motors from different manufacturers.

I have no idea about pricing.

I heard that the folks behind the design of this unit are ex-Arriflex employees. I also heard rumours of a law suit. I don't know for sure about either of these allegations, but perhaps someone else here does?

One thing I do know is that the readout on the screen depicted on that website looks very similar to the Arriflex unit I saw at NAB last year.

First, the guys from c-motion are ex-arri but they are not P+S!! P+S ist only the german distributor, since c-motion is based in vienna, austria.

Secondly, there is a arri is trying to sue all major manufacturers of wireless ff-systems (starting with SCORPIO,c-motion, chrosziel and preston will probably be next!).At least, that's what I heard here in germany. Personally, I think it's ridiculous!

Oh, and the c-motion system is really nice. I tryed it at P+S her in munich and was really impressed. It's small, very handy, easy to program and not as expensive as I thought it would be!

I just heard of very bad feedback from this new Follow Focus System.

An operator had purchased one of the first units and had major problems to make it work with his rig, not sure if the motor didn't work or the wireless link... anyhow. He brought it in locally, to get rewired, when they opened the unit and compared it with the provided wireing diagram nothing matched...

To make a long story short, he has now a very nice and expensive paper weight...

Anybody has some positive feedback... I haven't heard any...

Hi Mitch,

There was a working system at the Thompson booth at NAB. The focus/iris hand unit was fairly small, light, fit your hand. I was told you could add zoom. I believe you could use with a variety of digital motors including their own small and light weight motor. It all worked there. Also interesting was an on board lcd dof read out, very similar in fact to the arri system, which could be preprogramed (input the focus marks) for your personal set of lenses. I admit it was the dof monitor that caught my eye (I'm a very happy Bartech owner).

gentlemens i had the chance to play with this item at a arricam workshop in technovision paris last winter and c-motion was brand new.

as far as i remember it works good with the ultra primes and S4 witch are electronicly motorised lenses.

C-motion has a soft with digital marks to avoid extra video to film lens marks, it calculates atomaticly depht of field and hyperfocal and it recognise the lenses. it fits perfectly in hand but looks tricky to masterise .

by the time it was only for focus and iris....

i hope it's help?

I just purchased a complete system including a wireless zoom control. Way more ergonomic than the Preston, or any other. Small, Light and smart. Works with any motor system out there, I got the Heden motors which allow instant gear changes and swaps from side to side with no tools. No waiting list, and cheaper than Preston. Can order a case from the MFGR custom fitted. I don't think the Arri guys are involved, though the last name of one guy is the same as an Arri guy... supposedly no relation.

The Display can work independently of the hand unit with it's own wireless link; now the DP (or Director) can trigger the speed ramps, roll or cut camera, change FPS or Shutter angle and more without being attached to the AC. The tiny zoom control can mount to the gimbal so you can pull your own zoom, or attach to the pan handle while the AC still has focus and iris. Operates video lenses with the ENG internal motors. Display also works with as Virtual lens display, though it doesn't know if the motor has jumped off the lens... remembers lenses by serial number, so once it's memorized ("Calibrated") it will always be accurate. Interfaces with cinetape and displays actual focus vs. suggested focus, and, yes, it will pull focus for you.

I've already got a Preston and it's gonna get dusty.

One Issue only: Mounting the tiny Heden motors is much easier on Arri rods under the lens than Pana rods on the side (same as any system)

I've seen a sweet motor mount for the Panaflex that mounts to the modular follow focus attachment that allows 2 motors (iris and focus) or 1 motor only (if you remove the side arm) to operate from that point, but don't know who made it. Does the Hill system use rosettes or rods? I think Preston makes this mount as well, though I haven't seen any pictures anywhere...

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mark

We just had one on a feature. I used my bartech. The AC loved the C-motion until the one crane day. It was 40 degrees F the lens was stiff and the C-motion would not self calibrate. We ended up using my SLD with the crane guys bartech.

The shot looked much better in focus.

After that day the AC stopped bugging me to buy a C-motion.

I assume this was a problem with the motor not he C-motion itself, but I was told that the motor was the only one available. Though, they may have meant from this particular rental house. I'm not sure what motor it was. I'll try to find out.

You can use any (digital) motor out there; Preston DM1 or 2, Scorpio, Heden, Panavision, Arri, even integral (analog or digital) motors on ENG style lenses; you name it, the CMotion will operate it. I'm trying to get a cable to operate the panazoom motor, but no luck yet. BTW, you don't have to self calibrate the lens, you just operate the portion of the lens you want... I've had the same problem with the Primo Macro zoom when lookng strait down with a Preston; the front element group is just too heavy

The new motor control box has a voltage booster so when you are using a 12 volt camera the motors (which usually need more juice) will still have enough power to complete the task, even if it's cold... My guess is that there was some play in the motor clamps; I've noticed that it will give me grief if the iris rods slip a bit. I took me a while to figure out how to work around it, but you don't have to scrap the system because it won't calibrate.

Don't get me wrong, for the price the Bartec is the best system around, but it has it's limitations, like no camera control and no 2-way communication, and only one channnel per hand unit.

It's kind of like comparing a dual core pentium with a wang, or an amiga... one does some things quite well even today, but you can't really compare them on all levels, because one does so much more than the other.

Any ideas about the Motor mount that fits on the front of a Panaflex? I still can't find any pictures of the one I saw. It needs to either have or allow rods (any size); No rosettes.

Thanks,

Mark
