Video reciever problems

Hi All,

I've got a Wood & Douglas 1.39mhz (I belive) video Transmitter/Reciever system which was supplied to me by MK-V a little while ago. I took it on a job the other day and had a few issues, reciever based I belive. Although I could get a picture no problem when the receiver was plugged directely into a monitor when it was fed through a DSR-11 DV deck no picture would appear. I tried all sorts of combinations including feeding it through a monitor out into the deck but with no luck. I'm no engineer but it seemed as though the video signal was too weak for the deck to pick up.... has anyone else had this sort of issue before and what little box of tricks do you think I need to stop my face getting that red again!

Just to clarify, the reciever was recieving perfectly (and still is)... just having problems getting the image onto a DV deck....

Thanks in advance you brainy bunch!

Does your DSR-11 have an input selector switch on the front like our DSR-45 or maybe it's imbeded in the menu system? It seems like every time I go back into our suite to try to do something with DV and the deck is not seeing the signal it's that switch. Just a long shot.

Cheers Robert,

Yes it does have an input selector switch on the front of it; first thing I went to. I negelected to mention that I tried running the output of the video tap directly into the DV deck and it picked up the picture just fine. So if the DV deck gets a picture from other sources and the receiver works fine with other monitors inputs; I'm guessing it's something to do with the video output on the reciever not being enough for the DV deck to pick up on and therefore won't record anything....

Nice thought mate, thanks for the reply! :)

I wonder if passing the receiver's signal through a video D.A. would boost it to where the DV deck would recognize it?

This seems to be the prollem with the ARCHOS recorders, as well. Modification of the docking station base cable appears to be structurally sound, but many customers report no video signal getting to the deck, Customer research indicates the problem as being video signal level (in dB?) The recorder appears to want a specific signal (dB?), and won't recognize anything else. No response to several emails to ARCHOS engineering.

*sigh*

Damn!

I just got my Tx/Rx case all sorted and cut to the perfect size and now I need more crap! :)

Will test this out in the next couple of weeks... can get a cheap DA off ebay but does anyone know of a little simple one, perhaps which can take a 9v battery???

Cheers for the input Charles and Fred, much obliged to you!

Hey Joe!

How's tricks? Long time no see! Thanks for that... Will have a think about Marell vs. Horita- Marell is nice and close (and I like them!) but the Horita/B&H one will still prob work out cheaper!

Charles... Nicely found- very cute! I reckon I'll go with something sturdier; so I can treat it rough!

For what it's worth, it's actually a perfectly sturdy unit--looks funny without the battery in place, but when it is in there, it's no more vulnerable than any other unit, really.

VAC also makes board-level DA's...if your receiver has a bit of extra room in the box you could even ultimately wire one internally, if that was the key to solving the problem!

It may not be the strengh of the signal dB but the quality Q. Often the synch on the signal from your reciever is not good enough (too broken up) for the deck to recognise and accept. Definately try the signal amp however your receiver is putting out it s own amplified signal so it should not be a weak video signal problem but a slightly weak/broken synch it may be that you need a time based corrector. This is a f*cker and a nightmare. Jaques from transvideo is making a small TBC unit that can go anywhere but otherwise there are few places to find small units and I have not succeeded in finding something that was useful enough for shoots.

I often put the signal in to the sony 9inch monitor first and then feed the signal to the deck rather than the other way around. The monitor seems to correct whatever signal/synch issues enough to work. This often involves taking apart the whole of video playback s unit much to everyone s protest.

Charles! That is a really nice find! a proper must have for any steadicam op./ camera assistants kit.

Cheers Charles; will take it into consideration... very handy size to have- Thomas is right!

Thomas, how goes? Feeding it through a second 9" was the first thing I thought of... great minds, eh? Thought it would sort it out too. Got a clear picture on the first monitor but the DV deck still wouldn't pick up a picture...

Have been pretty busy the past week and have a few weeks on crazyness but will go do some tests somepoint soon with one of those DSR-11's and see what the problem is...

Thomas- pechance did you have your problems with one of those all-in-one video assist 9"/DV combo-bastards? Perhaps we had the same one and it's a one-off with that? I spent my lunchbreak taking the back of it apart too... Take2 perhaps supplied it? I can't remember.

Yup, I did have that issue with one from Take2 all in one miniDV monitor and deck and an sr3 camera sending the signal.

It did work (picture wise) though once I re wired it.... now you mention in... I made them scrap the playback DV deck for steadicam as I used my onboard recorder.

I have also had occasion to suspect a few camera bodies video taps of not giving a great clear signal. Just ok for watching on a sony 9inch (they will literally take any synch at all no matter how messy) but won t record on clamshells etc etc.

Take2 are good but I don t hold that much hope in them sorting that unit to satisfy a few occasional steadicam ops.

Let s have a moan anyway. Oh and what about that pint Ben?
