Premium Members Daniel Stilling DFF Posted April 15, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 15, 2004 Hi all, Today I worked on a music video with a very special (read heavy) package! It was a 435 (so far so good...), Hawk anamorphics (also know as lead lens) and a big LED ring light... It wasn't that hard to set up, just a pain in the butt to chage lenses, and the power cable to the light was allways present... That was certainly fun. Here are some pics of the setup, with the M1 motor. Daniel Stilling www.steadidane.com dan@steadidane.com

Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted April 15, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 15, 2004 Daniel, I see you have a Baerbel sled but also a Transvideo frame generator. I thought the sled has a buil-in generator. I tooks like a nice set up. And you are lucky to have no viewfinder, I never had any 435 without viewfinder and I´m sure that saves some weight. JakePollock
so how heavy was that ring lite? it looks like it couldn't be that bad.
Premium Members nick franco Posted April 15, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 15, 2004 Hi Daniel, Do you have any closer pictures of your vest? Am interested in your buckle mods. Thank you, nick
Premium Members Daniel Stilling DFF Posted April 15, 2004 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted April 15, 2004 Hey all, Well, the ring was about 5-6 pounds, but it was a huge mass very up front, that took the CG very forward. And when the director decided to use big fans for the talets hair, it became also a big sail! Long takes (whole song as in any music video), strong winds and a big camera set-up makes for an interesting day!! Rob, My sled doesn't have the upgrade of the frameline and digital level. I had for my old sled the Transvideo frameline, that I transfered to this one, but I believe the new sleds all come with the frameliner built in. Nick, I'm sorry I don't have any pics of the vest itself, as it's not the most gorgeous piece of equipment I own, it's an old model II extremelly modified that I would not trade for any other vest, except the DSD/Klassen, but I'll be glad to e-mail some pics, when I get a chance to get around to do it. I'm leaving town tonight and will be back in a week or so... Daniel Stilling www.steadidane.com dan@steadidane.com
JakePollock
hear you on the wonky front-heavy (exacerbated by the anamorphic lenses no doubt) and the strain from that big "sail" but do you remember the make of the light? i'm pretty sure that's the same ring light i saw on some pictures of erwin's at the steadicenter site. just curious. cheers, jake pollock taipei, taiwan
DavidAmphlett
Next time you might want to use a much lighter LED light fixture, which is Steadicam friendly, less than 2lbs. step down rings from Primo Primes down or fits on Arri and PV bars. Weights and dimensions available on the website along with photometrics. tungsten or daylight balanced as well http://www.gekkotechnology.com regards David
Premium Members RobVanGelder Posted May 8, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 8, 2004 It´s a nice small light, but the light output is also low, according to the charts, usable but low. It gives you approx. f 1.8 on 100 ASA at 1 meter/4 ft distance. That means some pretty close focussing all the time! I pity the focus puller. <_< The light falls off rather fast, if your talent moves between 1 and 2 meters you need to shoot 400 ASA or more. I would not really want to use it in a moving shot, it is primarily for static close-up (make-up) beauty shots. Not sure what the big ringlight will give but I think it is a bit more. Not a major difference though. Rob van Gelder, Bangkok, Thailand
Anthony Hardwick
This isn't a ring lite, but for a lightweight "obie" or eye light that can easily be attached to any mattebox with some velcro, this looks pretty good to me. I'm thinking about the "Camera Lite Kit." http://litepanels.com/html/packages.html
George Grammatikos
Hi Daniel i saw in the picture that you have modificate the bar tech receiver back in the rig ! is special for that shooting (for the bad point of cg)or it help better in this pllace(avantages?) just wondering George
Premium Members Daniel Stilling DFF Posted May 9, 2004 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted May 9, 2004 Hey George, Yeah, I had to put the receiver on the back, but it was no big deal, as the top stage of the Baer Bel sled has screw mounting holes on the back and front. It was better for the CG, but I believe that the light wouldn't have fit with the receiver in the front. All the best Daniel
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted May 9, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 9, 2004 This isn't a ring lite, but for a lightweight "obie" or eye light that can easily be attached to any mattebox with some velcro, this looks pretty good to me. I'm thinking about the "Camera Lite Kit." http://litepanels.com/html/packages.html Anthony: Met with these guys to discuss a lighter-weight packaging with some added features for our use (geared dimmer control to mate with iris motor, that sort of thing). It also has "just enough" photometrics, could stand to be a bit bigger/brighter if the case wasn't metal. I'll get back with them to see if they have made any advancements. Premium Members Guido Lux Posted May 11, 2004 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 11, 2004 Guys, What about the Kamio (Kinoflo) Ringlite?! Anyone tried it? I found very easy to put on the rig and very nice to fly! Any comments? Guido Lux
