Ringlite

Hi Guido,

Yes, the Kamio is a nice and very small device. One glitch that my DP found annoying enough to not use it is the little black rubber that goes around the lamp at the connector. This 1 inch black spot in the ring lite is very annoying when doing close ups and you want the reflection of the ring in the eyes. makes a little dark spot. I also find it as "tricked advertising" when I check my last copy of American Cinematographer and see a complete , full ring of light in the Kino ad featuring the Kamio....

That glitch is probably not that serious for steadicam use. Just for still shots or close ups.

My 2 cents...

Just got the info from Kisslite... wow....and that wow also applies to the price tag...

Toys for TB-6 owners... <_<

I don´t know if it was the same but on a shoot (not steadicam but DoP) I had this kinoflo, it was about 20-25cm in diameter, very easy to set up in the lens with the bars attached to the camera (435) but I think is has a clip-on possibility too.

Again, the light output was very low, compared to the ambient light and it didn´t work on anything further away than 80-90 cms from the lens.

Also, I didn´t like that you can see where the socket from the tube is; a black part in an otherwise perfect white circle.

Basically, the light output of any of these lights is not enough, if you have to work that close to your actor/actress you will have problems with shadows, distortions and your monitor is almost touching him/her. :(

Today I worked on a music video with a very special (real heavy) package! It was a 435 (so far so good...), Hawk anamorphics (also know as lead lens) and a big LED ring light...

It wasn't that hard to set up, just a pain in the butt to chage lenses, and the power cable to the light was allways present...

I worked with same exact setup as Daniel did.

Because the Master series stage is sooo long, it's impossible to get the ring light on it, or, so I thought. Then I remembered 2 posts from the Forum.

Daniels pictures of his Bfd's mounted in the back of his stage and Larry's post about turning the top stage around 180 degrees for easier don juan. I put the two ideas together and it worked! So, if you have a master series, you CAN use a ring light.

The only lens it doesn't work with is the 25 because it isn't long enough to reach the ring light and the Mag prevents you from moving the camera foward enough to reach the light (otherwise the ring would be in the shot) We never used the 25 anyway so it didn't matter. We went up to 75mm which wasn't horrible but right after lunch and at the end of the day it was a tough one. The shot we were doing really should have, and easily, could have been a dolly shot. I should have insisted but... I didn't.

And yes it does take time when changing lenses. Which the director and AD didn't seem to get even after the end of the second day. "Are you ready? how much longer?" My poor camera assistants.

My favorite moment was when the director yelled "Roll camera" even though my rig was on the stand and my assistants were changing out lenses. My first said, "Rolling" and a grip yelled "Action" and yet another yelled out "Cut!" funny.

Here's a crew photo. This was a rap video and we shot this in a club called "Deep" on the corner of Hollywood and Vine. Notice the Capitol Records building in the background.

Sidenote: I re-read larry's posting about turning the top stage around. Actually he only turned the Camera around not the top stage. (Oh boy, I hope I didn't tangle up the wires inside my rig!!! doh!) It still works so.. I guess It's ok. guuulp.

Now, now.. I'm happily married. I certainly wasn't smiling after this pic. They added a 75mm lens and I had to get down low. Darn! I left my rickshaw in the van!

If you guys would like a closer look at that picture, check out Mr. Bartells website Bar Tech Engineering under "Photos"

Just try not to drool all over your keyboards.

and for you Rap fans out there. Here are the lyrics to the video I shot.
