Moderator Duties

I wanted to speak up in defense of our moderators as some of their opinions have taken on some fire both recently and in the past. The common argument being they are here to moderate, and therefore should not be speaking their opinions.

I think much of this problem is the result of semantics. The title "moderator" was simply the default terminology built into this web site's software. It applied to any individual given the power to move, delete, and alter posts, and other very basic administrative privileges. As the site grew, so did the burden of administration upon Tim, which is why he asked for people to volunteer to help.

Keep in mind, our current moderators were nominated by the rest of the forum. Their original duties were not to be unbiased judges of the forums. Tim simply needed more help, and who better to help deal with a Steadicam forum than Steadicam operators? Since then, I think they have done a great job of organization and spam fighting.

It would be a great loss to this forum if the moderators were instructed to moderate only. They were nominated because of their long-standing reputations and levels of experience in this industry. If I am looking for anyone's opinion on a subject, theirs would be three I would value most.

A man should be measured by the content of his posts, not by the title he bears!

...I think Twain said that....

Best Regards,

Afton

I think that there is a point beyond the fact they're a Moderator - it's the fact they're a Moderator and seem to have a personal vendetta against certain members and/or manufacturers - and whenever they get a chance to stamp their "disapproval" publically on this forum they take that opportunity. I won't name names, I don't really need to.

I have no personal problem with the Moderator in question, I've never met them, nor do I wish to ever meet them - personally I wouldn't want to. Their attitude stinks and I'm sure the more junior members (I want to term that very carefully) may be a little cautious of posting in case they're shot down in flames.

I wasn't going to post on this - I'm not sure if I should have posted this, but I believe that a Moderator is a member of staff, who should set an example and be an ambassador for the forum, no wonder people don't visit any more.

Afton, this is nothing personal against yourself I have never met or spoken with you, but I have the greatest respect for you, along with a lot of other members here - it's just a shame it's been spoilt.

Cheers,

Jason

Let us not forget the hours of work that Erwin and the other moderators have put into cleaning up and organizing the forum. This place would be a lot less efficient and less useful without their unending commitment to maintaining this forum. As one who reads more then posting, it means a lot to have some organization to this place. Also, because they monitor the boards so closely, the moderators are often the fastest responders in times of need, again making this forum more useful.

I don't always agree with their postings, but I can only imagine their frustration dealing with repeat posts by people that don't search and repeat arguments by people that like to argue.

Anyway, thanks to the moderators for putting so much time and energy into something that we all take advantage of.

Cheers,

Matt
