Premium Members Michael Stumpf Posted February 8, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 8, 2007 In recent weeks, we've all seen the infestation of new "SPAM" threads being started. Everything from porn to bogus legal mumbo-jumbo. What is this site doing to stop it. I have a suggestion: We need to have a minor fee based membership. Maybe $5-10 per year. Would this stop it? I can only imagine that with a fee based forum, only paid members have access to the forums and therefore no spam. Thoughts? Suggestions? Premium Members James Puli Posted February 8, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 8, 2007 Just throwing another suggestion out there, is there an option where new members have to be approved by moderators or someone else before being granted member status and posting rights? This would stop the random user name problem as well as all the spam and crap. Its just the whose going to do it bit next. JP
Premium Members Jason Williams Posted February 8, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 8, 2007 Here are two tips. The BIGGEST problem is that you have no Captcha image security (those little pictures of wavy-shaped text) - bots can read this, but if you change fonts (see here http://forums.invisionize.com/index.php?showtopic=106899) then it makes life so much harder for spam bots. Most if not all forums now have this as standard (even if not enabled). Another good method is the one already mentioned - Moderator/Admin approval, you can visually check each account that way. There is one final way, but I haven't found anything about this, I invented a system whereby you have to select a picture - from a choice of 6, get it wrong, you can't proceed, to a human they're simple, to a bot - it has no idea which is which. For me that has stopped 99.99% of bots signing up and spam posting. HTH Jason

Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted February 10, 2007 Moderators Report Share Posted February 10, 2007 "In recent weeks, we've all seen the infestation of new "SPAM" threads being started. Everything from porn to bogus legal mumbo-jumbo. What is this site doing to stop it." Hi folks. Regarding spam in general: the moderators delete multiple postings a day on this front. Yes, there has been a huge increase in recent weeks/months, but such is internet life. As for making new members "approved" before they can post, we do not have the power to do this (that has to come from Tim, who is very busy). So, as of now, there seems to be little choice but to continue to manually delete spam as it comes in. To be blunt, if you have noticed an especially large amount of spam the last few days that is because all three moderators decided to take a "time out" after our efforts were belittled by someone in another thread. I'll probably get around to commenting on that elsewhere when the time is right though. In the mean time, we are doing our best to make this an enjoyable experience for everyone so thank you for your understanding.
