Premium Members Dan Coplan Posted February 19, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 19, 2007 There must be some way to compare incoming messages with the names of legitimate users, no? Can anything be done? I'd be very happy to re-register if necessary in order to "certify" myself for posting or whatever. Any pro lifers out there changing their minds about capital punishment? I'd happily pull the trigger on a bus full of spammers. Dan
Premium Members David Allen Grove Posted February 19, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 19, 2007 I hear ya Dan. We never used to have a problem with spam. I wonder what changed? I would be willing to re-register as well. It would require a LOT of work for the moderators, more time than they have, but this forum could be set up so only moderators could approve newer registered members, completely eliminating all spam. It has been proposed to Tim. The spam started when he started taking google ads

Premium Members Dan Coplan Posted February 20, 2007 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted February 20, 2007 Are the Google ads worth it? This forum is a great resource and it's FREE! I know that the people behind the scenes work hard to keep this running so I'm certainly willing to put up with some degree of either spam or advertising or both but it is getting out of hand. Tim and moderators - you're the guys that make it all happen. What do you propose? Dan
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted February 20, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 20, 2007 That is totally up to Tim. So contact him directly. We have no say in that. BTW: Usually we moderators are deleting most of the spam before anybody has even seen it... there are usually 10 to 20 spam posts per day... so you are not even see the full extend of the spam spam spam spam....spaaaaaam, sausage and egg. Erwin, Steak and Tomato extra. Service is free.

Tim and moderators - you're the guys that make it all happen. What do you propose? I'm not sure the Google ads have anything to do with it. There are plenty of forums w/o ads that have incessant spam problems. Spammers simply seek out forums of any kind since it's a place where personal information is sometimes easy to get, and the number of people the spam reaches is large. Running a website can be expensive. Especially one with high traffic and a lot of content like this one. What little money the ads generate (and believe me, it ain't much) does help. As long as the site is free to use, I have no problem with them. The moderators do a great job of cleaning it up, and I think it's far from being out of hand. There are a couple forums I used to frequent that are so bad now, it's impossible to wade through the crap to get to an actual post. It's a spam swarm. As Erwin and Eric said, the ultimate solution is up to Tim.

It's gotten to the point that it's out of hand. All Erwin, Alec and myself do is trash spam (and track Steve Bryo when he's on the site) in the last 24 hours there have been at least 50 deleted post's. I hope Tim updates the Reg process to make it more difficult for spammers to sign up
Premium Members Jason Williams Posted April 10, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 10, 2007 Here's my suggestion (I think this should be possible) - make all new sign ups Moderated and allow the Moderators to allow or disallow these - you should be able to keep a track of the SPAM posters easier (generally their username is in the searchable location - a pattern emerges) - and those with real names can be allowed through - surely this will be more productive than deleting spam every few minutes, spending time allowing genuine members through. Tim Tyler
I just made the previously optional registration field "Stabilizer Owner" a required entry. Let's see if the bots make it past that.
