Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted November 23, 2006 Moderators Report Share Posted November 23, 2006 Chris, Call CSC yourself. I've used the 235 from CSC with Steadimags. Someone is confused.
Premium Members Chris Konash Posted November 23, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 23, 2006 Thank you Eric & Alec, I'll give then a call next week, it's a student film so they might be holding out on "the extras". oh, I forgot, is my 435/535/sr3 run cable the same for the 235? That would just make my day... Chris Konash
Premium Members Brant S. Fagan SOC Posted November 23, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 23, 2006 Chris-- Yes, all the current ARRI cameras use the same power connector, 2-pin Fischer 105 seris, and the same RS connector. And yes, CSC has the vertical displacement mags for the 235. I know because I just did a feature with that camera, but from Panavision, and production had to get the mags from CSC because PANY did not stock them. Good luck. Best, Brant S. Premium Members Charles Papert Posted November 23, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 23, 2006 Anyone know if the older style longthroats (i.e. SL Cine 35-3 mags) will also work on the 235? Given that the 435 has a different pitch on the mag port than the 35-3, is the slant of the 235 continuing in the same direction (bad for those mags) or back towards the 35-3 (good!) Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted November 23, 2006 Moderators Report Share Posted November 23, 2006 Charles, By the time I flew a 235 in battle, CSC had the 235 Steadicam mags out, but when I first saw it at a focus group they were planing on using 435 Steadi mags. I asked if anyone had actually put one up, which they had not - so we did. If I remember right, the bottom of the 435 Steadicam mag is angled very far in towards your center post. Its been too long since I've messed with a 35-3, so you can take over from here.
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted November 23, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 23, 2006 I checked the SL Cine website and it's pretty apparent that the 235 continues a trend in Arri cameras for the mag port to move towards the vertical. The good thing about that is that the throat has gotten progressively shorter (good for torque) but of course if you have the older mags like I do, you're sorta screwed. Here's the SL mags:
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted November 23, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 23, 2006 Hi Charles, If they keep on going that way, that they were going with the last couple of models... your mag's will eventually hit your gimbal... - 35-3 - 30 degrees - 435 - 42 degrees - 235 - 60 degrees Anyhow, I really learned to dislike that camera (based on the rental houses). Yes it's light and cute and cuddly... But it seams that almost nobody in LA know how to work it (my Pana Head AC jammed the camera in such ways that I was released after only one mag shot... they had no steady conversion for the a cam 435, I was hired again, but not my AC... that time they got me a 435 right away), On another show I ordered a lowmode bracket and the steadimags... I got the carrying handle and the dolphin mags... one time I got the 200 foot mags... but we had only 400 footer loads. Also It's way to light for slow creep shots which I had to do with the camera upside down, with 435 standard mags and primo lenses... It was all over the place and changed constantly as the film rolled... again shafted by Panavision. Producers like it, because of the low introduction rental rate... I'll take a 435 over a 235 any day. (At least until they figure it all out... eventually). Just my 2 cent rant, Erwin
Premium Members Steve Fracol SOC Posted November 24, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 24, 2006 I just shot the open scene of a feature last Tuesday with a 235 from Panavision. I had no problems. The shot began with an ugly up hill run to begin... complete with a long set of stairs with a nasty dogleg right switchback...then pause for a kick in of a door to find dead bodies all over the place inside the house, etc. (fun stuff). This being only the 2nd time I flew the 235 with Cooke S4 21mm lens but I must say I really appreciated the lightweight... especially for that type of a shot. I would have been just as happy with an SL Cine but....I had no camera problems at all with the Arri 235. On this one we only had HH mags. Still not an issue. Used about 80' per take. We got 7 takes in that night and all was still good with my legs, etc. (SWAT team stunt guys kept running into my sled on the switchback that is why 7 takes). Personally I love that little camera. I guess I will continue to love it until I get burned like Erwin. Sorry to hear that happened to you buddy. That sucks. Hopefully just one of those things that happen...not a regular problem with the system. Anyway...back to the topic...confirming the power connection is the same as SR 3, 435, etc. Very Best to all, Steve Fracol, SOC
Premium Members Charles Papert Posted November 24, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 24, 2006 I would have been just as happy with an SL Cine hope we can make you that happy soon, Steve, if the planets align...!
Premium Members Chris Konash Posted December 3, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 3, 2006 Good news, after a few calls and some searching CSC found the 235 steadi mags. They were apparently in a closet under the spare bathroom soap and next to the plunger... I guess it's not an everyday rental item. I'll post how the shoot goes next weekend. THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR INFO. Chris Konash
Premium Members Thomas English Posted December 3, 2006 Premium Members Report Share Posted December 3, 2006 Agreed about the 235 being too light for my tastes. I have been putting as much metal on that camera I can. As well as powering using those cute batteries.
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted March 15, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 15, 2007 And they did it again... Last week I did a music video with a 235 from Panavision again... I was hired after the Prep as they wanted to use the Technocrane but when I got available... (It's interesting how many times I lost a job to a Technocrane... today again a call they haven't decided... either the Techno or me... and I should put my self on hold...) Anyhow - Anamorphic C-Series and E-Series - and 435 SL-Cine mags.. panavision again didn't had them available... Some of the lenses had a 8 to 12 pound weight difference, between the 28mm and the 50mm I had to crank down or up all 4 springs (2 blacks, 2 blues) of my PRO arm. Actually the 28mm weight more then the Body and the loaded mag together... of course it had to be supported... and it balanced and flew like a lame duck... Fun with the 235... again I'll take a 435 any day over the little brother... Fly safe, Erwin PS: Was so crazy I forgot to make a picture... darn. Premium Members Brad Grimmett Posted March 15, 2007 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 15, 2007 Erwin, At least you didn't have to stand around waiting for 6 hours before your first shot.....oh wait, you did....
Premium Members John Perry SOC Posted March 6, 2008 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 6, 2008 If a camera house tells you that they can't find any Steadimags to rent, try calling Cameratrux Inc out of Nashville. They have multiple Arri Steadicam mags for 235, 435 and 535's all in-house, and they can quickly ship them to you same-day to where ever you are. They've bailed me out a few times when the rental house dropped the ball. Here is their info: Cameratrux, Inc.
