Long time reader first time poster... I felt the following link was well worth the time to register and show you guys... Apologies if it's already been posted somewhere.

The amount of stuff that had to go right for this to work is simply staggering!

Amazing, simply for the amount of prep work and stamina on the part of the operator. Imagine the pressure on everyone to not blow the take.

On the other hand, there are several places in the sequence that cry out for a cut to a CU, IMHO, demonstrating that a marathon steadicam shot doesn't always serve the story.

Still, it's an impressive acheivement.

You can read Rob Van Gelder's commentary on this shot (and a cleaner version of the clip) on Afton's Steadishot site:

http://steadishots.org/shots_detail.cfm?shotID=58

This would have been a great shot to use an SL Cine camera on a lightweight rig like a Flyer, methinks.

I can only imagine being 3+ minutes in and having go Don Juan or backwards up the final flight of stairs, complete with an unwinding pan back to Missionary in the middle of the staircase (and tilting down to the floor!) Pretty tough stuff. Lots of cues to remember.

That's the part that has my mouth drop more than anything - not just because of difficulty, but more because of WHEN it happens. An end like that to such a crazy move is definitely an astonishing thing. I think everyone here wondered if he switched to Don Juan or hoofed backwards for that. It was a fast ascend but not too many stairs; I suspect he did it backwards because of the turn, etc. Would love to know.

As for Close Ups. I kind of liked them opting out on those. Maybe its because I've been doing too much TV where everything "needs" a close up. Sometimes I think the action tells us just as much as someone's face.

Would have been a good shot for a Flyer.

Incredible! Unfortunately, it won't play from steadishots.

Grrrrrr... I know. This is one of the few videos on the site that I only have in Windows Media format (the norm is Quicktime). WMV is not entirely reliable. I'd love to have a Quicktime version if anyone has one, or knows how to convert WMV to Quicktime (not as easy as you'd think). Sorry for any inconveniences everyone.

Best,

Afton

Hi Afton,

Did you try this ? : http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm

You need to pay for the Studio Pro version in order to not only play but also convert.

Or maybe with this or that, good luck !

K.

Got it. Thanks, Chris!

Hey, does anyone know who operated Steadicam on "Raging Bull"? It's not credited, but the shot starting inside Jake's dressing room, traveling out into the arena is definitely Steadicam.

Much thanks!

Afton

Hi Afton

The Operator was Garrett Brown .

If you look closely in several of the wide shots you can see him in the crowd .

All the best
